Default Alberta Health Care Coverage Extended for Snowbirds

Today the Alberta Government anounced that they have extended the Alberta Health Care coverage for snowbirds to 7 months. So I don't see how this changes much, as the tax laws haven't changed in Canada or the USA, so if you are in the USA more than 6 months, wouldn't you still end up paying taxes in both countries? I'm not sure how this benifits anyone that plans on staying the USA more than 6 months. Can anyone here on CP shed some light on this?

Rules were changed for Canadians 55 and older (I think the age was 55) can stay in the US for 240 days a year (almost 8 months). So this gets a little closer to matching that.

Any link to an article or government press release?

Just want to read it to make sure it doesnt mean CDN tax dollars are going to be paying for US Medical coverage of geezers who spend their winters down south.

It doesn't. Just means that they won't lose their Alberta health care due to being out of the country for a longer period. Other provinces already have this legislation.

Long-term travellers can now be out of Alberta for up to sevens months a year and maintain their health care coverage as long as they don’t take up permanent residence outside the province.

MacKenzie adds the extension doesn’t change the need for snowbirds to purchase out of country health insurance.
“My own wife had a small episode a couple years ago, was in the hospital for 12 hours. If I hadn’t had insurance, the bill would have been $14,000.”
I believe that snowbirds will still have insurance upto 7 months after they leave Canada, i.e. they can come back and get medical treatment in Alberta.

I thought that Albertan's get covered for what it would cost in Alberta. At least that is how it was when I first moved to the US. If the operation was $100,000, in the US, but it would have only been $40,000 in Canada, Alberta pays $40,000 and you pay $60,000. And that the supplemental insurance you can buy pays the difference.
