Try for one of Niskanen, Nikitin. Emphasis on Nikitin. Such a solid D-man for CLB and will be worth an overpayment if he chooses to test FA.
Re-sign Cammy or Stempniak and let Stajan walk.
There are some truly awesome players on that UFA list but I do not see any reason that the Flames go out and grab a Statsny or Marleau or Gaborik.

I will be sad if we give Stastny $8M per.
I will be happy if another team gives Stastny $8M per.

Andrew MacDonald or Nikita Nikitin on defense
if they can't re-sign Stempniak, I'd be fine with Devin Setoguchi if it's a contract with reasonable term

If we can sign another "Hudler" type. Just a solid 2nd line type that you can plug in there and he'll do his thing. That would be great. No need to overpay for some guy like Stastny.

I think Setoguchi would be a solid addition. We lack depth at RW and he's an Alberta boy so it seems like a decent match

Back the truck up for Vanek (in the unlikely event he's still available).

They should offer me a contract worth about $5 mil per year for 2 years.

I'd go for an underrated guy from a winning franchise. Look at the Chicago and Boston type of teams, and who they might be letting walk. Get guys from winning programs who can be mentors for the continued rebuild.

This. I wont' care much if the players we sign aren't the most offensive guys. But I would gladly take them if they come from a winning environment. More Detroit UFAs please!

Not much of interest on the list (excluding the guys who will obviously be re-signed) and a bad year to look at FA's anyways with the team being a few years away.
Look for a few cheap, short term deals for guys as fill-ins but no need to overpay or sign a deal for long term for any of the realistic options.

Stastny won't be offered anything close to 8 million.

I think Douglas Murray is done in the NHL. I loved watching his career with the sharks. I loved seeing him plaster a player into the ice at least once every game until the word got out to just stay away from him. I've seen him take a shot at the blue line, a player rams into him to finish a check and while Murray is flat footed, knocks the guy to the ice like he was made of paper with only his arm strength.
BUT he was always a horrible skater. He was also a very, very smart hockey player and covered his deficiencies very well. But he's just too slow now. He's still great defending a 5 on 3. He's a fearless shotblocker.
I don't think he has what it takes to be the 7-8th on the sharks anymore. May be a good mentor guy as a 7th for you guys.
Setoguchi is still one of my favorites, but he's wildly inconsistent. I still think he could flourish in the right place, but I'm not sure.

Setoguchi looks like a Hudler type that could thrive in a rebuilding situation where he doesn't have to worry about defense or making a ton of mistakes and can just go out and try to score all the time being fed top line/PP minutes. Not really useful on a good team but keeps things exciting for bad teams.

Setoguchi is a perfect example of a placeholder. Someone that's good enough to make your team not completely embarrassing, but not good enough that once your prospects develop that you need to keep him.

Kris Russell & to a lesser extent Blair Jones are guys who I'd consider re-signing from our crop.
I'd probably try & sign Ryan Callahan or Devin Setoguchi before I tried to re-up Stempniak. Both are younger upgrades, IMO.
Would anyone be tempted to offer $6 million to Halak? I can't believe the guy is only 28. Seems like he's been around forever & has always been solid. Not that I'm not sold on Berrorama or anything...

I'd rather sign Callahan and Setoguchi than any of Stempniak Stajan or Cammalleri. Not because those two guys are awesome, but we need to continue to turn veterans into young assets at the deadline. Keeping any of those three guys hurts our rebuild, especially when we need to spend their 12 million on something as we're at the floor now.

I don't really see the point. He is a bottom level starter in the NHL at best, if not a back-up. That is a huge overpayment for a guy of his "skill."
Plus with this team not being close the best case scenario if he somehow plays above his head is he gets us to 9th-11th range instead of 12th-15th range. Not sure that is a positive.
I am not sold on the Ramo-Berra combo but they are fine for a rebuilding team that shouldn't care about wins or losses. Let them or one of them have the next 3-4 years and then get a real goalie, whether through FA or Gillies as many seem to be hoping for, when the team is ready to compete again.

Quite a few goalies to consider if one or both of Berra and Ramo don't work out
Flames still suck at faceoffs. Ian McClement would be nice

There is no way the Rangers let Callahan walk
