Default Gretzky finally gets money

http://slam.canoe.ca/Slam/Hockey/NHL.../21313121.html

"Gretzky, head coach and director of hockey operations when the Phoenix Coyotes were bought out of bankruptcy by the league in 2009, will receive an estimated settlement of $7-8 million, ESPN reported."

About time, he really got screwed over. Mind you, that's what happens when you get involved with Phoenix.

The second part of that article is BS. Screw Brodeur, the Olympic starting job doesn't "belong" to 7oungo, I'll take Price thank you.

Agreed. Luongo's great...when he's not thrown off his game. Unfortunately it doesn't take much to do that, and it takes him a while to regain his level. Kiprusoff would get lit up in a game for 4 or more goals, and we expected bouncebacks and got them almost every time. After a bad game, it was a shutout or a 1 goal game for Kipper almost like clockwork. Luongo is NOT like that. I don't think, even if he's hot going in, if he's worth the risk. Price for me please!

I'm glad Wayne got some money back out of this whole situation. Who knows what he lost in that deal. People might not realize, but he only made more than $4 million 3 years of his career. He was modestly paid by today's standards and he did a lot in terms of endorsements and such to get the majority of his wealth. He's worth a lot now, but 7-8 million is worth 2 years of his prime career years.

As long as there is a rider in the agreement that he never takes a coaching job or management job in the NHL when it comes to individual teams.

The guy was one of the greatest players ever (though I like Bobby Orr way better). But his turn as a coach was incredibly poor and I doubt he makes a great GM.

Give him a job promoting the game and its a great idea. But leave the hockey related jobs to the professionals.

I think this bit is overblown. I honestly dont think he wanted to coach the Phoenix Coyotes but when he has sunk a ton of his own cash into the team and they were hot garbage he was watching his investment turn to dust and just took matters into his own hands.

What he shouldnt have done was financially hamstring the team with a $4M coaching salary when the team was borderline insolvent.

Are you sure he put any of his own money in the team?

From what I heard, he got an ownership stake only by attaching his name to the team.

Should the NHL be bailing him out for a bad investment he made? Did he rely on the NHL in making the investment?

Can't blame him for taking Moyes money. But man he definitely had a hand in that era.

The guy wouldn't practice with his team, he would fly back to L.A. from Glendale Airport after games. Hired all of his pals for big $$$.

He is owed it, but he doesn't deserve it.

I always understood that he was pulled in as an investor.

I could be wrong too, I just recall him investing when they put the team there.

Now that he has his money, maybe he won't have to sell this anymore.

Ah, I see you studied up so you can pretend you've been a Coyotes fan for more than 3 years.
