Default Conservative backbenchers are revolting! - Part 2

Quote:
A Conservative MP is set to introduce a bill that would give party caucuses significant powers — including the ability to vote out their leader.

[...]

[The] proposed legislation would also give party riding associations the ultimate say in electoral nominations, removing the leader’s signature from the equation for the first time since 1970.

While the Globe article is focussed on the recall measures, I'm actually more interested in the party nomination change. It could, for example, give citizens a way to finally get rid of Rob Anders.

Previous threads in this series are:

Conservative senators are revolting!

This bill will certainly affect all parties. It will be interesting to watch what happens.

Yes it will. It will likely require a backbench revolt from the Libs/NDP to pass, but maybe it's possible that one of the opposition party leadership supports it.

I'd say the party is...ahem...revolting.

I think characterising this as a revolt misses the point. The guy has been working on it for years. It really harkens back to the early reform days of giving more power to parliment and backbenchers.

I really like this legislation.

Fair enough, but I wanted to keep my thread-title theme going, and it does kind of relate to Warawa's bill.

And for what it's worth, I this I like this one too. Although, it could lead us into a Hastert Rule type of situation where a PM could be toppled despite having the confidence of the House. That would be an odd situation (if the PM lost support of his party but gained enough support from other parties to have a majority of the House), but in that scenario I'm not sure if this bill would be a good thing.

The people already have that power by voting.

Yes, but this way they don't have to choose between the turfing the candidate and supporting the party. They can do both.

The fact he puts politics ahead of personal belief is the only reason they're where they are.

Personally, I think people put too much emphasis and loyalty into parties. This shouldn't even be an issue. Any good candidate should represent the will of their constituents.
