US Thanks Giving
Why is Thanks Giving so big in the states?
It is the busiest travel day in the US and seems to be a bigger deal than christmas.

I'm not sure if this is joke post but I think it's bc it's always on the same day, Thursday. Most people take off Wed and Friday so they get a 5 day weekend to go spend with their families. Christmas here you get Half day on the 24 th and a full day on Christmas then you go back to work on the 26th.

Thanks Giving? Have you never looked at a calendar in your life?

In addition to what nicker said, I think the fact that Christmas is a religious holiday plays a factor as well. If you're not from a Christian background, you're not likely to celebrate Christmas (even though it's increasingly secular, it still has a Christian origin), whereas everyone can celebrate Thanksgiving.

Everyone with kids wants to wake up in their own house with Santa's presents under their tree for Christmas, so Thanksgiving becomes the holiday to spend with extended family by default. And, since everyone goes home for Thanksgiving, it's the only time of the year that you can get together with a large group of childhood friends who have moved away. Plus Thanksgiving is great because there's no stress/monetary burden of buying presents and it's non-religious, so everyone can enjoy it.

Thanksgiving signifies the beginning of the holiday season for me. We take the long weekend off and hang out with family. This is the first year that we didn't cook a turkey as we went to a relative's home. It also is the weekend that we start decorating for the Christmas season. We love it. Every year we get more and more of our Canadian neighbours coming by for a beverage during the weekend.

Thanksgiving is the original, Protestant, Quaker-approved all-American holiday whereas Christmas has really only been celebrated in the US since the late 1800s. Previous to that it was shunned for being a Catholic, and worse, pagan celebration. It was even banned at one time.
