Default Flames Exploring Trade Options

Just stumbled on this article from the 4th period

http://www.thefourthperiod.com/news/cgy131118.html

According to the Calgary Sun, Michael Cammalleri, Lee Stempniak, Matt Stajan and Chris Butler likely candidates to be shipped out of town this season.

What would you want in return for these players?
Is there anyone else you would like to see gone by the end of the season?

Please share!!

While I would be ok with us re-signing Cammalleri, Stempniak, and even Stajan to a degree... give them that chance to comeback in the off-season.

But realistically, why would they choose to re-sign?

So if possible, trade any and all expiring UFAs.

Cammy for a 1st + prospect?
Stempniak for a 2nd?
Stajan for a 3rd/4th?
Butler for a Blockbuster membership card?

Cammy and Stempniak I wouldn't mind back, but it has to be after we trade them and get something in return. However, I agree, they wouldn't re-sign here because who wants to play on a team like this in the tail end of a career.

We would have to give them a blockbuster card and a free meal at Denny's

I don't see the reason in re-signing any of them. This team isn't good with them, we can't be much worse without them. If we can get better in the future with picks or prospects or even younger players with the returns we'd get in trades involving these players, then we could just sign some guys in the summer to replace whatever value these guys have.

There are lots of players that are going to be available in the off season. I know everyone has a hate on for Heatley so a player like him who can just be a goal scorer (to replace Cammy) might be perfect for this team. The Flames will hve tons of money and cap space to work with so I would rather them get new players and trade what we have.

Have to continue to tight-rope that fine balance between young players + solid vets.

If you lean to hard towards shipping out all your vets, you end up in perennial rebuilds for decades.

From the forwards, I would like to see one re-signed and two moved.

My preference on re-signing would be 1) Stempniak, 2) Cammalleri and 3) Stajan

I would like to see Butler moved. This team needs to get more difficult to play against. And Russell has bumped him down, so has Smid.

I think the only one that would generate an interesting return would be Cammalleri. He would be among the most coveted players available at the deadline. Should be able to get a 1st +

Well, no real news here at all. I actually expect all of them to be shipped off.

Tampa needs defence and perhaps a bit of help on offence with Stamkos out (though defence is their priority apparently). I don't think there is anything on the defensive side of things that the Flames could help them out with unless they want to ship out Russel. O'Brien, Butler and Smith wouldn't be too attractive to them - though I do think Butler has the most value out of the three. Don't think the Flames are really willing to trade any of the top 4 + Smid.

Stempniak + Butler to Tampa for Kucherov? I would be happy with that, though I doubt that gets it done.

St. Louis is apparently thinking about getting an offensive winger. Nashville needs offensive help. Pittsburgh is always making deadline deals.

I actually think as long as Stempniak keeps producing moderately, he will be one of the more attractive pieces on the Flames, especially for a team looking to make a move soon. Cammalleri might be the biggest offensive piece available this deadline - unless the Islanders put Vanek back on the block. Gaborik is probably the next best bet - but if I am a contender, I would prefer Cammalleri's history in the playoffs, and ability to play all 3 forward positions.

I will be happy if the Flames add another 1st this year along with 2 seconds. One 1st + 2 seconds give you the flexibility to jump up the draft and pick the guy you are targeting. Flames have a fairly deep prospect pool at the moment, but are still light on blue-chip prospects. Having a high pick + a mid-range pick can go a long way in helping to correct that.

Completely agreed, but I think Stajan is the only one of those 3 forward UFAs that would come back.

But come free agency, Cammy will have a list of teams lined up for him, and Stempniak would be a smart pickup for a playoff team looking for a depth scoring threat.

That's assuming you can't get any vets to play here in the off season. Every year there are a lot of players who are looking for work. This year we could have had a few guys and I'm sure next year we could have a few different guys. With the cap situation the way it is, and possible buy outs for teams I have no doubt there will be a lot of players we can pick from. Of course we won't get the #1 guys because they'll probably want to sign with contenders but we could get some good players still.

After Cammi, Stemp, Stajan, Butler there still are few vets on this team.

Glencross, Jones, Hudler, McGratton, Galiardi, Giordano, Wideman, Smid, SOB. Thats plenty to provide veteran "leadership".

So these 4 plus other should be moved if you can get anything for them.

The quoted article does nothing more than state the obvious. Not at all worth a thread

Also, our other pending UFAs include:
F: Jackman, Blair Jones, Ben Street.
D: Russell, Smith.
G: MacDonald.

Keep Russell obviously, maybe Smith if we dump Butler. Blair Jones and Ben Street are solid AHL players.

Definitely want to retain Stempniak. Good on-ice role model for the younger players. He leaves it all out there.

Otherwise please trade Cammalleri and Stajan.

Exactly, some talk about Cammy, Stemniak and Stajan like they're our only vets on the team. Funny that a while ago, people would give away Stajan for free now they want to keep him around as long as possible....We need more younger players in the system, not old vets on the team
