Default Philippine typhoon

Personally i think it should be front line news but its not really "news" although 10000 people believed dead. Couldnt imagine how many people are homeless.

The US is sending some troops to help out.

Wow, I had no idea it was that bad. Hopefully they get the international aid they need.

The CBC article says sustained winds of "only" 235 km/h that gusted to 275 km/h but I've read articles that put the sustained winds over 300km/h and gusts up to 375km/h.

This storm was thought to be the most powerful ever measured and it's not like these poor people could just head down to their cement poured basements and ride it out.

It's freaking nuts over there now. So I have family there in Cebu and I was there last month 1 week before the earthquake hit. As of last week, there was still aftershocks coming through,,,and now the biggest typhoon in the history of the world is there. Pretty crazy.

This week on FB, all my relatives were posting about preparations for the storm. Then the day the storm hit, lots of power got knocked out and it was silence for 2 days on my news feed. It was pretty worrisome, but I finally got news this morning everyone is okay (at least in their region).

This storm happened at exactly the worst moment in time. A month after a massive earthquake, and only 2 years removed from a devastating storm in 2011.

My relatives and their neighbors all hid in their closets. No one has basements there and many churches and schools were full to capacity.

Vietnam was thankfully spared from this. Say what you will about the political leanings of it's government (and it's strong command and control) but it sounds like they were quite prepared for this.

"The government has an extraordinary level of response. They invest both in preparedness and response, and the highest state of alert was called by the prime minister.

"The preparations have been underway for days now. They activated both civil and military capacities. This is a country that is very resilient and extremely well prepared."

Anyone know what's the best, most fast acting NGO to donate to make a difference? Red Cross?

Bumping this thread. So you guys know the Canadian government is matching all donations raised. Talk about bang for your buck. Sending money is the most efficient and useful way to responding to disasters, trust me I study this sh*t.

Remember #calgarystrong? Let's help out.

Katrina was a powerful storm but it hit a city that is built below sea level that could be a lot of the problem.

No it wasn't, T@T is right, the storm was 3.5 times more powerful than Katrina.

Edit: Oops, misread your post PIMking... I shouldn't post after a long weekend.
