Default Shaving Problem

So, I know this has been discussed a million times on here but we love rehashing old stuff, right?

Anyways, I'm just wondering what everyone recommends as far as getting the 'perfect shave.'

I've tried different techniques, different shavers, different shaving cream, aftershave, etc, etc....and I just can't seem to figure out how to actually get a perfect shave.

I get skin irritations/razor burn on the right side of my face everytime I shave, and no matter what kind of after shave, moisturiser or lotion I will use afterwards, I can't get it to heal/go away before I shave again.

I've shaved in the shower, after showering, before showering....everything. As long as I can remember I've had the same problem with the razor burn.

Is there a special cream, special shaving cream, special shaver, special lotion....anything that would help? I remember using the Mach 3 razor, and I think that helped me get a pretty shave, but the latest Gillette crap has always given me problems.

I can get blades for the Mach 3, but can't find the actual handle part. Unless I haven't looked in the right place.

Any help would be appreciated.

I shave in the shower, use conditioner (not shaving cream) and use a fusion razor. Works just fine for me now.

Used to have problems with irritation when I used to shave w/ cream.

Interesting.

At this point I would certainly try anything. I'll give that a go next time I shower.

What kind of aftershave do you put on afterwards? From what I hear, anything alcohol based isn't good for you as it dries out the skin.

I use an Aloe Vera gel that you can buy from Costco. It is apparently supposed to help moisturise and heal the skin, but I haven't used it long enough to really notice a difference.

Try shaving only one way: IE: only down or only up, depending on which way the hair grows.

I stopped shaving all together because of irritation. NOw I just trim with an electric razor trimmer thing.

I was actually wondering about the really expensive electric shavers you can buy these days? Do they work pretty well?

I've had a $100 one before, but it never seemed to do a good job, and in the end it would be quicker to get a clean shave with a razor even if I got razor burn or whatnot.

Well, you're supposed to go WITH the grain IIRC, which would be down for me, but I can never seem to get a clean, close shave that way.

I've been plucking for a few months now. It takes a while, and isn't the most comfortable thing at first, but as time goes back fewer and fewer hairs grow back so it gets easier. Plus you don't have to waste money on razor blades, which is a plus.

I use cold water to avoid razor burn. If I shave with warm water I get burned everytime.

Azure, I have the exact same issues and still haven't found a good solution. I find that shaving after a hot shower works the best for me but if I scrub my face really well before shaving it makes it worse.

Meh, I've probably fully shaved 15 times in the last 8 years, so I probably should have just stayed out of this.

None actually, tried it a couple times and I actually felt that it irritated my skin. Just rinsing my face off in the shower seems to work just fine.

Now I have found that my skin does get irritated when I shave in the shower in some other countries. Don't ask me why, probably something to do with the hard water or something like that.

I use Cromwell and Cruthers Shave Oil. It's supposed to be for sensitive skin (not something I have issue with), but it works great for me.

You can only find it at Shoppers Drug Mart (from what I've seen). I use the Shave lotion from Gillette (Fusion I think), but again I don't have sensitive skin, so......

Hit your big toe with a hammer before shaving. I guarantee that you'll forget all about razor burn.

You pluck your entire face?

Would leave a bloody mess for me and take forever. What if you want to grow facial hair of some kind some day?

Plucking an entire face?

That would take me a year.

And it's also pretty damn girly.

My girlfriend bought me this stuff and it works really good to get rid of red bumps/razor burn. I used to have it really bad and this stuff has almost totally got rid of it. It's like a roller ball and you apply it after you shave.

She works at Angles Hair Salon so I'm sure you can find it there. Good luck man. Oh and it burns like hell, but so worth it.

After a shower, bare razor, hot tap water, zip, zip, zip, spit back the hair, try some toothpaste, throw on the relevant clothes and off to work.

Not a big production, just yawning routine.

I do a combo of electric and razor. Electric during the week and razor on the weekend. I have no problem switching back and forth between the two. I would recommend a good hot shower, bring a clean washcloth. Get the water as hot as you can and put the towel on your face, leave it for as long as you can stand, then apply the shaving cream. Leave it a couple minutes and then shave. Always shave in the direction of the hair, and if you don't want to try shaving cream, try ice cold water. Rinse off in the shower and run your cold water and rinse your face.

Try that for a few weeks, and always use a sharp razor.

For the electric, I use a Braun. The high end version, it is really good.
