Icon48 October 21 - 2 other games

both in action, both low-scoring games midway through the 3rd:

San Jose at Detroit - scoreless
Colorado at Pittsburgh - Avs lead 1-0

Pens have outshot the Avs 30 to 11, but they simply can't solve Giguere, who has been outstanding again tonight. Put Patrick Roy behind the bench = instant goaltending magic.

Pierre Mcguire

His most hated rule is the delay of game penalty when the puck doesn't touch the glass. He mentions this every friggin game. His argument is aww they didn't mean to! Yeah Pierre, we'd love seeing players flick the puck into the stands every time the play gets heavy. That would be awesome

Can't his boss tell him to give it a rest already? It's embarrassing.

Jokinen sold it but that is a real tough call on him with the Avs guy tackling him.

Stupid play by Jokinen on what would be a sure penalty.

The Pens are really missing that right handed shot.

Also, it's infuriating to see Colorado play like this after picking MacKinnon.

Wow, Giguere. 3 starts, 2 shutouts.

Sharks and Wings scoreless going to OT.

Colorado stole that one. Great performance by Giguere and the Avs did a good (enough) job clearing rebounds and making sure the shooting lanes were clear all game long. Pittsburgh missed some open chances, Avalanche had some horrible luck as well. Avs are 8-1

The second period was wide open hockey with both teams skating really well and creating chances. MacKinnon was completely overwhelmed whenever he was on the ice against Crosby

Why?

They were missing Landeskog and Downie for most of last year. O'Rielly missed a good portion of the year also.

Add MacKinnon and Tanguay + a new coach/system.

They are a very different team then last year.

Great game in Pittsburgh, what a difference Roy has made in Denver.

Colorado had the worst coach in the league last year. It's no surprise they're a much better team.

What a save by Niemi in the shootout to win the game.

Down and out, Bertuzzi lifts the puck and Niemi gets his leg up and kicks it away.

One regulation goal scored in two games. Guess the NHL didn't make the pads small enough.

Why? Would you rather the Avalanche pulled an Oilers and picked first three straight years and STILL sucked? I think it's great they are turning it around after a short period of suckage. Gives hope that the Flames can turn this around quickly and not have to end up like the Oilers.

Wasn't the leg pads that are the problem. Its the bulk in the body and in the arms. It used to be that the arm pads were much smaller than the blocker, now the blocker and the arm pads are the same size. Shrink the upper body pads and the goals will come. Will make guys like Luongo a thing of the past.

Funny you say that, I came in here to note how different Giguere looks compared to his ridiculous equipment 10 years ago. I guess he's actually following the new rules unlike Luongo, who's equipment is still insanely oversized. But yeah, still probably too big.

Sweet play by Datsyuk stick handling through 2 guys and getting the pass off.

Amazing save by Niemi. Almost but obviously not quite up there with the scorpion and the face down behind the back kick.

Crosby off the scoresheet, and the Avs should count their lucky stars. Amazing player.

SHUTOUTS galore on the OOT, with 3 in total! Giguere was awesome with 34 saves in the 1-0 reg win for the Avs over the Penguins. Fleury only faced 14 shots but that was a howitzer that beat him. Landeskog scored it just after getting out of the sin bin. Niemi and Howard got the other SHUTOUTS as the Sharkies and Red Wings went scoreless after 65 minutes. The Sharks outshot Detroit 27-24 and won in the SO. These 2 games will be replayed on the NHL Network later on at 10:00 and 12:30. The Sharks-Wings game is first followed by the NBCSN\TSN2 Avs-Pens game.
