Flames Flames go Skeet Shooting

http://www.calgaryherald.com/sports/...250/story.html

Quote:
After showing up in head-to-toe camouflage, a personalized rifle under his arm, and resembling a walking advertisement for Bass Pro Shops, everyone knew Curtis Glencross would have decent aim.
And, after all, it was his idea.

An afternoon of skeet shooting was on the agenda over the weekend in the Calgary Flames’ latest instalment of team bonding events this 2013-14 National Hockey League season. Already, they’ve attended a paintball session and were put to work at the Calgary Fire Department’s training centre.

...

Considering Glencross’s father-in-law owns a skeet thrower of his own that the Flames’ left-winger uses for fun in the summer, he had a leg up.
But once everyone got the hang of it, it was assistant coach Martin Gelinas who wound up capturing the team competition, an Annie Oakley-elimination round.

All-in-all it was a good day said head coach Bob Hartley.

“The boys had fun,” he said. “There was a lot of teasing and pranks out there but that’s why we do it . . . the difference between winning and losing is so slim that sometimes team unity can be a difference. That’s what we’re trying to get over here, that’s what we’re trying to build. Solid team spirit. More of a family.
Also it was Thanksgiving with the Glencross family:
Quote:
On Sunday, Glencross and his wife Tanya had the majority of the team and their families over for Thanksgiving dinner while there have been numerous team dinners — including a Saturday bash to celebrate the birthdays of Flames captain Mark Giordano (Oct. 3), Sven Baertschi (Oct. 5) Sean Monahan (Oct. 12), and Derek Smith (Oct. 13).

And with a 3-0-2 start to the season, there’s something to be said about the team-bonding efforts.

“We’ve been doing a lot together and are trying to stay a nice close group,” Glencross said. “When we’re doing something, everyone is there instead of doing our own thing.
“It’s working for us so far.”

They have done more in the last week for team bonding than they did in the last 2 years. Glad they are finally doing it.

Did this stuff simply not happen in previous years? Seems like Hartley would have tried it as soon as he arrived.

They were at my friends, cousins place. Apparently my buddys cousin was wearing a Beartschi jersey and Sven was extremely excited to see him wearing it. Sounded like everyone had a great time.

probably the lockout interfered with that, given that they only started in January and had a very tight schedule afterwards. Surely they had a tough time finding days to do stuff like that last season.

For the last few years, pretty much the players went their separate ways after road trips and team functions.

Rob Kerr has mentioned it a few times on the fan 960. Conroy hinted at it last year, when he told the story about how he had to admonish Glencross and Giordano for leaving Hanowski by himself.

Really, friggin Iginla?

It was Curtis Glencross and Mark Giordano who left behind the fresh from College rookie, it was Curtis Glencross and Mark Giordano who are still here and seemed to need a massive wake up call of the long standing captain and high paid Bouwmeester traded to get a wake up call.

Iginla was the team captain but that doesn't excuse any other player, especially vets like Glencross and Giordano from what they did or didn't do. It's a captain not a magic wizard.

Christ, move on.

Yes, this exactly what Hartley has said was the problem last season.

Actually it is 100% true that Iginla didn't do a lot with the younger guys on the team and management wasn't thrilled about it since even before Darryl left. His leadership on the ice was great but he had the reputation of not spending much time with younger players, preferred to spend time with veterans like Conroy, Tanguay, Bertuzzi etc.

Anyways it isn't surprising to see that management is trying to correct this and doing a solid job

What is this Skeet shooting, and is it similar to Skeet Ball or is that even a thing?

Skee ball is a thing.

Skeet shooting is where clay discs shoot out from two fixed positions and you shoot them with a shotgun. Pretty fun actually. Skee ball isn't fun, I always went for the big points and ended up with 10.

Glad to see this team is gelling. They really did seem to be disconnected, and after watching the Penguins 24/7 series it was clear that they had a team bond that was working for them.

Something to be considered with our NHL14 attitude (myself included) towards trading. Pulling a guy off the team does settle in with the rest of the squad, especially when there's talk of half your team being shipped out. I'm impressed they've been able to build team chemistry this year with all this chatter around the hockey world of the Flames set to be actively trading all season.

Aside: did Glencross and Giordano leave Hanowski at the airport or something?

^^^^^^
Glencross & Giordano (and the rest of the team, to be fair) all left Hanowski alone ithe dressing room after his first practice (first day on the team, in the pros, in a new city etc). Wasn't the most heart-warming welcome.

It's safe to say our vets have learned their lesson. Think about it this way: for the last decade there was a 'core' of Flames leadership who ran the show, but in a quiet way. Giordano & Glencross (and the rest) came into the team as secondary pieces & weren't expected to be vocal or do much leading. Now that the whole dynamic has changed & they know what is expected of them I'm sure they're contributing to this new positive vibe in the team.

How can anyone not absolutely love this current Flames team with this kind of mentality and the results they are getting on the ice. They make it really easy to cheer like crazy every game despite having no expectations.
