Default The Cool Gadgets Thread

Let's help each other spend money on stuff.

To start, a light bulb from Phillips, and ski goggles from Oakley.

... Yes, the Oakley goggles are already in the Android thread.

I'll hate this thread because it'll probably cost me money but it's a good idea.

I'm such a geek those wifi light bulbs are so cool, but $200 for a starter pack of 3.... ouch.

It's not too brutal when you factor in the cost of those special lamps that slowly get brighter to help you wake up (which this can do). The problem is when you want to expand beyond the 3 and suddenly your lighting setup costs $500.

The foldable Oru kayak announced today that they're going to be kickstartering in about a week, with a price of $800.

I'm going to wait until I hear reviews about how this actually functions as a kayak, and honestly I had hoped that the price would be closer to $500, but not needing to worry about portaging or roof-racks or anything really makes for an interesting investment for a casual kayaker.

Wow, that looks pretty sweet. Probbaly takes the same amount of time to fold it up as it would to get your normal Kayaks mounted up on the roof rack. Great idea, I hope it works well.

Somewhat more pedestrian than what's been listed so far, but this looks super useful:

That actually looks really interesting. I was going to buy one of those neat receipt things in the near future but this looks way better.

I've got a Fujitsu S1500 scanner and I love it. Scans both sides at the same time, does OCR, and while bigger than that one (Fujitsu has a smaller one as well) it does hold quite a bit of paper to scan (so I don't have to hand-feed everything).

The coolest gadget I got this summer is the AR Drone 2. It's very easy to fly and takes 720p video, which is decent but not great. The biggest downside is that it uses a Wifi connection so the range is limited.

I bought the Philips Wakeup Light a few months ago, as I pretty much hate the fact that I have to wakeup and go to work when it's dark out in the winter...

My wife was pretty skeptical at first, but we both swear by it now. It's a much more subtle way to wake up and I no longer have the OMG I'M BLIND moment when I go to brush my teeth.

The biggest downside is that on occasion I wake up when it's just starting to turn on (maybe 20-25 minutes prior to my alarm time) and it's pretty hard to get back to sleep after, though I try

TheGrimm, I've been interested in a wake up light for a while (damn this thread!)... do you find you wake up more refreshed or do you notice a difference? Ie) Is this just a nicer way to wake up then sudden music/beeping or is there actually something to it?

I've been using a "wake up light" for probably 6 or 7 years.

If the light wakes you up early, that's actually good in my opinion. Gives you a bit of time to sort of gradually wake up instead of being in a deep sleep when your alarm goes off and then your body has to snap to it.

I wouldn't go back to a regular alarm. That seems like to stupidest way to wake up to me.

Yea, I wouldn't say refreshed, I don't hop out of bed whistling show tunes or anything .

That said, I am definitely sold on it being the best way to wake up. 90% of mornings I just open my eyes (no sound) and go.. "Oh, it's time to get up." I would say it makes me less groggy, I find that I am much more inclined to simply get out of bed than the usual groaning, fumbling for the sleep or silence button and then sitting in bed trying to motivate myself to get up. If I happen to sleep all the way through to the alarm it plays little bird sounds which start pretty quiet and slowly rise to a moderate level. I have never had issues sleeping past the alarm. The bird sounds are tacky for sure, you can switch it to radio etc if you prefer.

My wife straight up laughed at me when I bought it, but she came around very quickly.

Garmin is launching a portable HUD unit for vehicles.

I learned to drive on a Pontiac Grand Prix that had this built-in and thought it was one of the best things GM has ever put into a vehicle.

For $130 (USD) I'll definitely be picking one of these up.
