US Congress wants to cut down the need for using lights, so extending daylight saving time by two months.

If Canada doesn't follow suit, time changes will possibly screw up important things like my TV sports watching schedule, and less important things like daily cross border cargo shipments, suddenly on different clocks.

wow, that's petty.

mountain time

vernacular people, everyone knows what i mean, but english is such that context means something - that's why we have so many words in our language.

say 'alberta time' or 'bc time' to people and they know it means 'mountain time' and 'pacific time' respectively.

on this board, we have:

the rags = the rangers

the bolts = the lightning

LOL = laugh out loud (believe me, this is the only time you'll see me post that)

need i go on, or have you figured it out yet?

Yes, the Rags are the rangers. Makes sense.

Talk to someone in Invermere about "BC" time though.

The time zones have NOTHING to do with provinces. There is no Saskatchewan/Manitoba or Ontario time zones either.

I think part of Brazil also does the 1/2 hour thing. I'm not sure what's up with it though. I guess they just like the extra 1/2 hour of daylight in the morning during the winter.

oh, i know.

but i am probably one of the top-ten bc-alberta province hoppers in history, i've moved across that border 7 times in recent years, north and south.

and everyone, everywhere, says 'bc time' and 'alberta time'.

Haven't you heard 'The world will end at midnight, 12:30 in Newfoundland'.

As far as Saskatchewan is concerned, I've been told daylight saving time would confuse the cows.

Sorry about this, just indulge an old fart.

I've never understood this. Cows can tell time?

Do they get distraught when their wrist watches read incorrectly?

Yeah, the cow bit bugs me too. I think it's just that the cows come in on a regular basis, and the farmers don't want to have to change what time they get up. It appears it would actually confuse the farmers, and not the cows.

Why would you be displeased? Studies have shown that extending daylight savings time both saves energy, AND reduces car accidents. Here is a great environment and life saving idea that nobody even has to do anything to accomplish.

Perhaps these studies were not at Canadian latitudes?

In Calgary-- only 2 degrees N of the border, sunrise this year will be about 08:24 on the last day of DST in October. If we were to extend DST another month, sunrise would be as late as 09:12 in the morning. People will still be driving in the dark on either the morning or the evening drive...people will still be using electricity at one end or the other. Imagine the situation in Edmonchuk where they have even less daylight after fall equinox. Definitely no energy savings or fewer car accidents there.

Go to Toronto's lat (43 degrees) or anywhere S of that (most of the US population), and things are much brighter in the morning:

Oct 29: sunrise is about 7:29 DST
Nov 26: sunrise would be 08:25 DST

MY POINT: At Southern latitudes, they have much more leeway to take away an hour of morning daylight and add it to the evening, because they have more to work with. For much of Canada, we don't have that

The problem isnt driving in the dark, but drving with the sun in your eyes.

Morning and evening commutes are a pain in the winter because the sun is right in your eyes. This is not the case during daylight savings time. Obviously the very fact that it is winter will change the sun's location, but it is the change in the sun's location during the rushhours that leads to reduced accidents.

I've read that accidents rise around the equinoxes because the sun rises and sets almost due East and West... meaning it gets in drivers' eyes on east-west roads.

The US changes won't affect the autumn equinox, which already occurs during DST, so I'll ignore that. However, they propose to have DST take effect just before the spring equinox in March. If we simplistically assume that the sun rises around 6AM and sets around 6PM on the spring equinox, then admittedly, going to DST would move sunset further from the evening rush hour (good) but would also move sunrise further into the morning rush hour (bad). It all balances out.

I can't point to any studies of this...I'm just going on my logic, which could be impaired by a couple of malfunctioning NyQuil caplets. If you have studies to back you up, though, I'm open to them.

i'd be displeased because of the actual reason behind following suit - not because it makes sense but because our big drunken stepdad is doing it first.
