Flames send 4 more packing
Quote:
CALGARY, AB – The Calgary Flames announced today that they have reduced their training camp roster by four players. Forwards Michael Ferland, Corban Knight and Max Reinhart have been assigned to the Abbotsford Heat of the American Hockey League while defenceman Keegan Kanzig has been returned to the Victoria Royals of the Western Hockey League.
The Calgary Flames have 28 players remaining at camp (3 goalies, 9 defencemen, 16 forwards). Opening day roster is due for submission to the NHL on September 30th.
The Flames will open the 2013-14 season on October 3rd at the Washington Capitals. The home opener for the Flames is October 6th versus the Vancouver Canucks at the Scotiabank Saddledome.

I feel like almost everyone we've sent to the AHL will be back at some point this year. When we trade more vets, it'll be good to have some youth with proper AHL seasoning to step in and show us what they've got.

Big surprise with Knight, thought he has been good. If you keep Monahan though you aren't going to keep Knight as a 4th line center.

Not sure why that would invalidate a rebuild. In fact an 18 year old is part of the reason why Knight and Reinhart were beaten out. A younger player.
We'll probably see Reinhart, Knight and Ferland this year as injury fill ins.

Yea, Knight is the only real surprise there... Really wanted Ferland to make it but his last couple of games has shown he isn't quite there yet.

A little surprised about Knight but I expect to see most of these players back in a Flames uniform this season.

Here's to another season of having more interest in the Heat than the Flames.
edit - Sorry, I'm just a little annoyed that they are going with a roster similar to the one we were forced to endure last year.

Your C's will be Stajan, Backlund, Monahan, and Horak.

So you think a rebuild a should mean putting undeserving players on the ice?

Whoa, it's not like these guys are dead to the Flames. They were training camp cuts and I'm sure that most, if not all, will see time in the NHL this year.

I'm glad Horak isn't on the list. Knight will see time with the big club this year, but for now, I think Horak is a better fit down the middle.

Rebuild does not equal rushing young guys into the NHL who are not quite ready yet.
Could Knight play 4th line center in Calgary...sure, but he could also go play 1st line minutes in the AHL and that would probably be better for the "rebuild".

Would have thought they'd keep Knight around, but again none of this is overly shocking. Kind of confirms that they're keeping Monahan for at least 9 games.
They need to get rid of some one way contracts to make room for more young kids.

These cuts were based mostly on contract status, not performance. That's all I was getting at.
