I came in here to comment that I thought it was too much for what happened, just based upon the people involved and Kessel probably fearing for his life. I then watched the video and had totally forgot about his incident's against the Flyers and now I don't think it is enough.

Actually if the NHL wanted to make it worse they should make him play ALL of the exhibition games this year and next.

Kessel: That's how I get out of pre-season games? Must try this again next year!

Good. Hopefully this is the end of no-skill goons attacking star players.

What a joke, but Hall got away with it last year too, so it's not unexpected.

LOLNHL!

And they fine the Buffalo coach for "player section"? What an absolute joke.

Actually, that's a fair fine. Scott was out there for a specific reason, and it had nothing to do with hockey.

Kessel's "suspension" is a pitiful joke though, and still, it is somehow more than I expected. Another misfire by Shanahan.

Seems fair to me. Suspended him for the second slash while noting that the first was in self defense.

Does he lose any cash over pre-season suspension? You'd think they'd add a fine if not, just to put some sort of teeth on it.

What a joke. Maybe the Flames dodged a bullet with Shanahan after all. Preseason suspension is essentially a holiday for Kessel. The Fan is playing his explanation for his suspension and Kessel's. In the Kassian one he says it was unintentional and wreckless while Kessel's was fully intentional.

Brutal. Just embarrassing for Shanahan. Absolute joke that he isn't sitting out a couple regular season games.

Star player? Victim is goon? Hockey play. I'm not even exaggerating when I say that Shanahan does his job like a coward.

It's really disgraceful because for me, regardless of the outcome, intent to injure is always worse than guys who made bad decisions in, say, trying to deliver what would otherwise be a legal hit (i.e. timed it wrong, ended up hitting guy in head). If you're TRYING to injure a guy, that's just inherently worse.

The NHL actually got this right. The idea of a pre-season suspension even goes so far as to rub salt in the wound for anyone who thinks there shouldn't be a double standard when it comes to the game's stars and its no name goons. The NHL is not a court of law. It's a corporation that makes money by putting its best assets in front of its customers every night. Not banishing them to the press box or IR.

Suspension length is about right. Too bad they're preseason games, but so it goes.

Damn rights. Bring on the double standard. Seems like the majority of times a star player gets suspended its because he is reacting to some plug anyway.

Keep the plugs in line.

Good. He didn't deserve to be suspended for any regular seasons game, whatsoever.

Total joke; while he may not have instigated the entire events, he grabbed Scott before Scott did anything beyond taunting him with words. It was then a full 2 minutes from the initial encounter to when he picked up his stick and 'speared' Scott. Obviously that wasn't a terribly violent act, but it was after plenty of time had passed for some common sense to prevail.

Also, Shanahan provides us with the brutal reason that the suspension is limited because the stick swinging didn't actually injure the player.

What a dumb way to set a precedent.
