Is it sad that I now view bottom feeders improving as good news for the Flames? The season hasn't even started yet and already I'm getting excited about Ekblad.

This must be what it's like to be an Oilers fan.

Boyes is meh, but Gilbert is a decent puck mover from the back end. Yay my new team! I actually really hope Florida digs its way out of the basement soon.

Boyes is meh but on Florida likely improves their top 6 a bit. He can put up points for a non-play-off team that won't care about his lack of defense and a well rounded game.

Gilbert looked bad in Edmonton and worse as time went on in Minny. I guess he can fill in a bottom pairing guy for the Panthers to help take some pressure away from some of their kids but can't see him helping much at all.

I would take him over SOB and Butler in a heartbeat.

Watched the guy play in Edmonton every game for years, trust me he is maybe the worst defensive player in the league. Only thing he can do at times is move the puck.

That's already more than SOB or Butler can do and one of those guys are likely playing in a top 4 role ES for Calgary this year.

I agree that Gilbert is awful but so is more than half of the Flames defense. This shouldn't make Florida anymore favorites for 1st overall than before.

Holy cow the exaggerations on Gilbert.. I watched him in Minnesota and he wasn´t that bad. Not my favorite by all means but he is a good skater and puck mover, and like Moon said he will help the younger kids on the team. Also a good addition to PP. Soft as butter though.

No they wont, but dont let exaggeration and over the top hyperbole stop you.

Seriously...you are saying that those two will play ahead of two of the following Giordano, Brodie, Wideman and Russell? I am with you that Butler has no place on this team...but OBrian does bring something the club doesnt have and that is size and meanness along with being great in the room.

I get that you hate most everything the Flames do, but this is just stupid.

I agree that Russell will be the 4th d-man, but you say it like its a good thing. Russell is as bad on the defensive side as Butler. He does bring offence, but considering he is paired with Wideman who is average at best on the defensive side, it won't be pretty.

No he isnt....not even close.

Neither guy is what you want in a top 4 guy ideally, i wont argue that but KR is so much close rto that than Butler.

Not sure how it is an exagerration or hyperbole. I do think that one of those guys will be ahead of Russell and if not a guy that just cleared waivers isn't exactly a studly option in the top 4 either. He is poor defensively and doesn't seem to bring enough in terms of offense to be any better of an option than SOB or Russell.

SOB does bring toughness and who knows about him in the room (he does seem like a d-bag but that might just be his public persona or teammates might like that.) but that is something that should be brought by a guy that is playing 5 minutes a night as a winger not as a defenseman in the top 6.

I like this move from the Panthers, as long as they aren't taking spots of deserving young players, these are 2 vets who, while inconsistent, might have good seasons and fetch something at the deadline. And if they don't, they aren't being paid to be difference makers anyways.

You can say what you want about Boyes not playing defense, that's pretty much been the Flames top 6 MO for years. If he can put up points without Tavares, the same teams inquiring about Cammalleri will be giving Florida a call. Even at the deadline he'll be making millions less than Cammalleri, so a team could likely grab Boyes for cheaper in assets and cost.

Gilbert for a team who maybe has an injury to one of their offensive defenseman or just needs a player who can play some PP time while getting bottom pairing minutes there's far worse options than having Gilbert as a depth defenseman. (And I would say you don't have to look very far to see them...)

As for Russell, O'Brien, and Butler. Does it really matter who plays top 4? Whoever does is not qualified to be at this point in their careers, I don't think it was an exaggeration at all to consider O'Brien or Butler playing top 4. I would say that Butler probably has the inside track just because the Flames seem to have favour him in years past. And if they don't, that still means Russell gets it, and he's not a huge upgrade over Butler if at all. (Clearing waivers 2 months ago because no team was willing to pay him close to 2M should be all you need to know on how he's regarded around the league right now).

Boyes makes this team better. Gilber helps their PP. I don't think these two help them make the playoffs but I think this helps them get ahead of the Flames in the standings and that's fine by me! They've made some ok moves and Huberdeau will probably be a bit better too. I think the Flames have got a lot worse then last year while other teams have at least tried to improve.
