Miss America awarded to woman of indian decent, twitter goes ape-****
http://www.cnn.com/2013/09/16/showbi...html?hpt=hp_c4
Quote:
(CNN) -- No sooner had the tiara been placed atop her head than a barrage of racist tweets flooded the Internet.
"If you're #Miss America you should have to be American," said one.
"WHEN WILL A WHITE WOMAN WIN #MISSAMERICA? Ever??!!" screamed another.
Nina Davuluri is American. She just happens to be of Indian descent. In fact, she's the first Indian-American to be crowned Miss America.
"Well they just picked a Muslim for Miss America. That must've made Obama happy. Maybe he had a vote," vented one person.
Not that it bears pointing out, but Davuluri's not a Muslim -- and the president didn't have a vote.
The 24-year-old Davuluri, who's from Syracuse, competed on a platform of "Celebrating Diversity through Cultural Competency." For the talent portion, she performed a classical Indian dance fused with Bollywood moves.
"The liberal Miss America judges won't say this - but Miss Kansas lost because she actually represented American values.

collection of troubling twitters are here:

I love twitter as a means to get news/info/opinion from the main sources, but it's become a indicative measure of just how perverse our society has really become, and level of flat out "stupid" that is out there.

The internet - and by extension, people - is/are terrible. Most of them just don't know it.
lol. From the CNN comments.
Quote:
it is THE TALENT you should complain about...would an Indian dance win Americas got talent?? NO! they are forcing others countries traditions on americans! IF WE WANTED TO WATCH INDIAN DANCE WE WOULD GO TO INDIA. EVERYTHING IN AMERICA IS RIGGED! VOTE UP IF YOU WOULD RATHER HAVE WATCHED A SQUARE DANCE OF BALL ROOM DANCE..THAT'S AMERICAN!
|
Quote:
You have to admit a dark skinned miss america just looks weird. I think it should follow tradition and be given to a white lady. it's about heritage not hate.
|
Quote:
Well, I can understand their frustration. She's Indian right? So why doesn't India let her become Miss India? She's not American responsibility. Majority of Americans are White, not Indian. Nothing racist about this simple fact.

When idiots like these have a public platform people can see how bigoted parts of society still are...it kind of disrupts the vision that we have progressed as far as we would like to think we have.

Think about the people that watch these type of shows, and it's not a surprise why these comments are being made. We're not exactly talking about the PBS demographic here.

Reminds me of this. I guess football watchers aren't very PBS either.
http://deadspin.com/5968935/take-tha...night-football
NBC pre-empted the first quarter of tonight's 49ers-Patriots game to show President Obama's speech at the Newtown memorial for victims of the Sandy Hook shooting. As you might expect, many football fans didn't take kindly to this.

Man some of those comments are brutal. I wish these people could be somehow instantly shocked while sitting at their computers when they post something that whould be weeded out of the gene pool.

I am so glad I live in San Francisco. We don't get that #### here. The worst we get is the odd crazy homeless guy who thinks the president is a robot.

People everywhere need to realize that putting something on twitter does not make it an opinion that matters. It's seriously just idiots that dont matter.

How long until the whole country just collapses on itself and we're just neighbours to a wasteland looking over to Mexico?

I'm starting work on a sci-fi piece revolving around the fall-out of a thermo-nuclear US civil war. I'm beginning to think it may not end up being so fictitious...

Expecting rationality and open-mindedness out of people who take something like the Miss America Pageant seriously seems like a pretty tall order.

Always curious about this kind of thing.. is it a case of just a few vocal nutbars? Or just a few people dumb enough to say what they're thinking where people can hear?
Impossible to do, but it'd be interesting to know what percentage of people actually feel this way.

Of course it is....but its way more popular/fun to jump on an entire country for the moronic ramblings of a small percentage. You know...paint with a wide brush/stereotype/profile stuff that so many hate...except when it comes to the US.

Wow, didn't realize some people took a silly pagent so seriously. I do really hope it is the vocal minority, although with the anonymity the internet/twitter provides, we won't ever know.
