Default US nearly detonated atomic bomb over North Carolina – secret document

http://www.theguardian.com/world/201...961?CMP=twt_gu

Quote:
The document, obtained by the investigative journalist Eric Schlosser under the Freedom of Information Act, gives the first conclusive evidence that the US was narrowly spared a disaster of monumental proportions when two Mark 39 hydrogen bombs were accidentally dropped over Goldsboro, North Carolina on 23 January 1961. The bombs fell to earth after a B-52 bomber broke up in mid-air, and one of the devices behaved precisely as a nuclear weapon was designed to behave in warfare: its parachute opened, its trigger mechanisms engaged, and only one low-voltage switch prevented untold carnage.

Well, it's only North Carolina. It's not like anyone would have noticed.

More seriously, that's quite terrifying. Three of four fail-safes failed. I really hope they did take the report's recommendation and heightened security measures from then on.

Goldsboro is the capital of delicious vinegar-based eastern North Carolina pork barbecue.

Does it make me a bad person that I thought of the barbecue before the thousands of people who would have died?

Yes, and you will burn in hell in a smoker for 6 hours at 225 F.

Watch Countdown to Zero. One of the most terrifying films you'll see. Talks about this event, and others, that outline the insecurity of our nuclear stockpile.

Canada doesn't have a nuclear stockpile. If you're American, then you would know from all the hilarious comedies from Hollywood that we only stock canoes for battle.

Isn't this a success story. You had a catastrophic accident and the failsafes worked.

Maybe I'm reading it wrong but I thought it meant that it should have detonated but didn't due toa faulty switch.

You're reading it wrong. The switch was the fourth failsafe and the only one that worked, the other three safety mechanisms failed.

This is the point where I admit to only reading the quote in the op and not the actual article.

I was speaking of "we" of humanity not of a nationality. Like many problems that plague the world, borders do not apply when it comes to security of weapons of mass destruction.
