Whenever I read a story about this, I always wonder how the media gets wind of these stories and pictures. Did someone who went along with them casually email them and tell them about it? Did someone steal his camera and forward it to the media? How did they know about it? Does Stoner's group of friends have a spy among them? What do they hope to gain by telling this story? Would a normal civilian be under such scrutiny? So many questions left unanswered, and all we have is a dead bear to show for it.

I anticipate a day where I lose my cool and start mounting stuffed heads of trophy hunters on my wall.

This. And then it was an issue because the natives found the wasted carcass.

On a related note, I am going elk hunting this month and pumped for it (my family is a bit more respectful about how it's done compared to this).

Just so everyone knows, you don't eat bear meat. Bears are hunted for the "rug", You shoot it, skin it and pack up. Stoner did what everyone else does who bear hunts, he did nothing wrong from a hunting stand point, nor from a wildlife conservation stand point.

The hunting debate is something entirely different.

I will never be a hunter, which means if the zombie apocalypse happens I'm screwed.

I don't have a problem with hunters or the act of hunting but I think they should be restricted to a bow and arrow to kill their prey...and if they can't do it with that they shouldn't do it at all. Some of these rifles give a crazy ridiculous advantage to the hunter, so much so that it doesn't take any skill anymore to hunt and kill prey other than stumbling upon the animal (and yes I know that there's advanced bow technology too).

Full disclosure, I am also anti-gun on just about every level.

I would rather a well placed rifle shot than a poorly placed arrow, both ways the animal is going to die, this way it is less likely to be from blood loss as it runs around in pain for the last hours of its life.

I don't like hunting if you aren't using the meat. And you can use the meat of a bear its just not very good although I have had some good bear jerky.

Hunting where you eat the meat afterwards really is no different then buying meat from the store other than the fact that you have to be an agent in the killing of your animal. I think that if you want to eat meat you should at least kill some of it occasionally. If you can't stomach gutting a fish or killing a deer should you really eat a cow that takes a bolt to the back of the head?

FYI you can eat bear meat, I have. I have an uncle that hunts and has killed a bear, and I did have bear steaks.

I do not like killing something just to stick its head on your wall.

Derek Sutton already touched on it, but I don't understand why this is a controversy.
I'm a hunter, but I have no desire to hunt bears, it's just not something that appeals to me. But the fact of the matter is,Stonder didn't do anything illegal.

If you're opposed to hunting bears, then make your case based on the facts, don't try to spin a "famous" person following the regulations laid out for hunting, to make it look like he is doing something seedy.

What we have here is a case of a group that is opposed to a lawful activity, so they describe it in such a way so as to make it sound like Stoner did something terrible.

The facts of the matter are:
1) The area was not closed to trophy hunting. A group doesn't like trophy hunting, and doesn't want it happeing in a certain area, but they have ZERO authority to make that decision
2) The part about the carcas being left to rot is irrelevant. The law does not require a hunter to use the meat. For most species it is illegal to waste the meat (deer, moose, elk, etc), for predators (bears, cougars, etc) it is illegal to waste the hide. Some hunters do keep/eat bear meat, but it isn't required, and Stonder didn't do anything illegal with how he handled the bear after he shot it.

I don't agree with trophy hunting. I think it's despicable to shoot a grizzly.

But there is no legal issue here. The native community doesn't like it. But Stoner didn't do anything wrong - he doesn't have to respect the request of the native community.

Many people in Canada ignore native communities requests (and are irritated if they actually take action on those requests, like blocking a road). This issue is little different. You are under no obligation to pay attention to others so long as you are working within the boundaries of the law.

If you have an issue with trophy hunting, you should talk to your MP and get him or her to start on legislation.

Until then - this is a non-issue.

It kinda is an issue. Because in my, and many other peoples opinion, hunting something simply to mount it's head on your wall, and nothing else, makes you a bad, evil person. It also makes you kinda sick in the head too. At minimum, it just means you just have a tiny penis.

This thread is going to get out of hand quick. It's some people's opinion that something is wrong or sick or cruel or whatever but it's others opinion that there is nothing wrong with it. The Law is saying that it is 100% legal, which it is. Our opinions of people who do certain things may varry, but it could snowball into any sort of debate. It's wrong to hunt in some eyes and it's wrong to eat meat in other peoples eyes. If a picture of Crosby eating a steak shows up online, will people be outraged that he's eating meat?

Stoner didn't break they law, he did something that many people would love to do and others think is wrong morally.

They should bring in perennially injured bear baiter David Booth to play with this guy.

On a related note, I saw a news report a few weeks ago that there may be 3X as many grizzles in SW Alberta than previously thought. This was determined by DNA analysis of hair on scratching sites. This jibes with anecdotal evidence of hunters and hikers in the back country.

IRRC, the hunt was suspended in 2006, but there is some talk that a limited hunt in Alberta could resume.
