Bobby Ryan's Story
I've heard before that Ryan had dealt with some issues on his way to the NHL, but never knew specifics. Pretty interesting story.
This may have been brought up here before, but I haven't seen it.
Quote:
Bob Stevenson, insurance executive, became Shane Ryan, professional gambler. And Bobby Stevenson, young hockey star in New Jersey, became Bobby Ryan, hockey prodigy and new kid in town. Bobby played along with the charade. "My parents made it clear," he says. "They were serious, so I only had to be told once. You're Bobby Ryan to anybody who asks, no exceptions."

I believe the first time he told the story was just before the Vancouver Olympics.

Yeah, I recall reading something similar about him when the Olympics were on the roll, though this is a well written piece and incredible story, totally his fan.

Great story about a stand-up kid. It's this kind of character that makes NHL players the class of the professional athlete ranks.
I sure hope the Sens can sign him long-term.

amazing. whole new level of respect for the guy for having gone thru all that, and not letting it become an excuse/hurdle/crutch.
I hope he rips it up in ottawa.

That was a really great read. I never liked him before, probably because he burned us everytime we played against him. haha. I remember there was rumors swirling of us even trying to get him (maybe just a CP thing... haha). What a great pick up and character we would have gotten in return.
But I really do have a new found respect for the kid to go through that life and still come out on top. Good for him, and I really hope he does well in Ottawa. In hindsight now, I think this was a steal for Ottawa in getting a guy that I would think a lot of his teammates would look up to.

great that he made it, can't imagine how many other kids in similar situations didn't get the happy ending.
for some reason though, I keep reading the thread title as "Ricky Bobby's Story". triumph over adversity either way, I guess.

Great story, thanks for the link. some people use hardship to weigh them down, some use it to rise above. This kid's got heart.

Bobby Ryan was born as Bobby Stevenson. His dad had a temper and beat up his wife, Bobby's mother. Mr. Stevenson was charged with attempted murder and a few other charges, but he skipped bail and fled to hide out in California. Bobby and his mother followed, where they lived as the Ryan family. His dad made a living as a professional gambler, and they lived to put Bobby Ryan through hockey. His skill brought attention to the family and his dad was caught and sent to jail. Bobby Ryan was good enough to play in the OHL. People were shying away from Ryan at the draft because of his family history, but Brian Burke was impressed with Bobby Ryan's combine interview and touched by the story and decided he had to draft the kid. The rest is history.
