Ever Witness Your Kids Have a Lapse of Judgement?
So today the family and I are walking down Banff Av enjoying the day, we stop to get some water and my son (11), is fooling around with the lid of bottle partially on and he squeezes the bottle in his mouth and shoots the lid down his throat. He starts gagging and immediately I figure out what he has done, and try to Hiemlech him, after some more gagging and vomiting, the lid finally shoots out.
I have to admit, that the whole thing was surreal, as people on the street stopped to watch, and a lot of things flashed thru my head. Afterwards he told me that he saw something on the Internet where somebody suggested this was a good way to drink water.
I feel like I aged about 7 years today. I hope my son learned a valuable lesson about listening to crap on the net, and I also hope that he listens to me a little more when I say that something he is doing is not safe.

Typical helicopter parent applying the Heimlich, hows your son supposed to learn anything until he's joked himself into a coma.
I certainly hope that you gave him that that was stupid you moron speech

Wow, glad he's ok!
Not being a parent or around kids that often I have to ask if it's normal for kids do stupid stuff like this or if your kid is just....well....special?

Always good parenting, but maybe get your kid checked to see if he's 'special'.
Kidding of course, sometimes people do dumb things. Adults have choked on bottle caps in bars. They should know even better than your boy.
He'll only do it once. Good on you for being around. I know exactly what you mean by aging when that happens. I resuscitated my gfs boy in a similar slumber circumstance. Not even my kid but I was a true dad that day.
Kids screw up. The funny thing is, at that age they know guilt and shame. Don't make it a huge deal, but make sure he knows. Chances are, he figured it out for himself.

We all do stupid #### as kids that could kill us. I was a little pyromaniac. I tried building a fort out of logs that eventually fell in on itself... with me inside. I climbed up to the very top of a tree, up to where the branches were not strong enough to support me and I fell (fortunately landing in soft ground and grass). I was playing Superman and jumped off the roof of my house. Eleven year olds do not think things through.... they just do and find out what hurts them and what doesn't.
As for lapses in judgement, we adults still have them. I forgot my epipen last weekend and nearly died of anaphylactic shock. And I realized a half hour from home that I forgot it, but I was like "what are the odds"? Pretty good apparently.

Its probably a genetic thing, so I assume my kids will only rarely have momentary periods of good judgment.

When I was a kid, perhaps the same age, a lot of kids used to drink pop this way for some reason. Unscrew the lid partway and squeeze the bottle while sucking on the lid.
Weird, but hopefully that gives you some piece of mind that we're all a little stupid at that age.

I did stuff like that when I was a kid, but now I'm a smarter wiser adult who only does responsible safer things, like shotgun beer.

I remember doing this with pop cans at that age, which seemed great until I cut my lip.

What a silly question. Anybody who has kids (and is a part of their lives) has seen their kids have a lapse of judgement.

I'm more astounded when my 11 year old shows good judgment. It 's the age where they know everything, but rarely think through anything before doing it...

It's a minor miracle that one of my four kids hasn't been seriously injured or worse by now. They do stupid crap all the time.

I have been having the same conversation with my 11 year old son for about a month now. Telling him to think about the consequences of his actions.
My wife asked "When will he grow out of this stupid boy phase?" I just looked at her and she said "Oh, nevermind"
Glad to here everything turned out positive for you and your family, but as we all know it's going to be a long run of poor choices yet to come, just hope they are not as life threatening.

You are not alone - all kids, especially boys, have lapses in judgement. This wasn't the first and it won't be the last.
