Can't say anything bad here. The Bruins are a really strong team and they have pretty solid prospect depth that will help them stay competitive. Excellently run organization.

Horton, Seguin, Peverly, Ferrence out
Iginla, Eriksson, sodenberg and 2 of Krug Bartkowski and Hamilton in
So much depends on if Chara can continue to be in the top 5 best D-man in the league at age 36. (best d-man in the playoffs).
If Chiarelli can keep the Bruins at the top over this next couple of years he becomes one of the best GMs of all time.
Has made all good moves since he took over in 2006 BUT incredibly lucky that it was Savard that got knocked out of the game and not Chara.
Of all the big UFA signings Chara for 37.5M 5 years in 2006 is the clear winner.
It set up GMs all thinking they could do the the same Sutter tried it twice: Once with Phanuef and once with Bouwmeester.
Feaster attempted it with Richards.
Compare Letang (58M /8 years) to Chara.... They were on the ice for 4 playoff games for a direct comparison.

As a lifelong Bruins fan, this is great news, Chiarelli is a quality GM and working alongside Neely he gets what works for Boston.

A strange comment to make about him being lucky that Savard is the one injured.
As for setting up the GM thinking they could do the same... Do the same what? Sign a physically gifted offensive defensemen who have put up points in the past to big contracts? I figure that would happen with or without Chara.

Just googled the guy.
Seems like a pretty long term to be giving to a player, especialy since it will be a 35+ contract.
I mean, he doesn't seem as old as Selanne, but maybe a series of Selanne-style 1 year contracts would have been more prudent.
