Scanning Code of Practice (SCOP)
Did you know...
When shopping, if a product you're buying scans in at a price higher than the price listed on the shelf, you're get the item free, up to a $10 maximum.
If the cost is over $10, you just get $10 off.
I was shopping the other day. Saw 2 separate displays for the same shampoo. One displayed had it listed at $5.26. The other said $4.97. I wasn't there for the shampoo, but grabbed some anyway. Took it to the cashier, who rang it in and showed a price of $5.26. I told her about the $4.97 display. No questions asked, and it was free.
Has anyone ever heard of this? I hadn't until my wife learnt about it last week.

Any store, or just the one you were shoping at? This sounds like an internal store specific rule. I find it hard to believe this would be across all retail set ups.

That will depend on the store.

The worst is having to explain the practice to cashiers; and then sometimes supervisors. I actually had an arguement over the same thing as the OP once; the supervisor claimed that because the item was in two places, as long as one of the places was right it was OK. So many times I get the price check, and then they try to give it to me for the lower price; not free/ $10 off.
Superstore does seem to be the best for just doing it; no questions asked. Funny thing- once on my way to a Flames game I had to get cash. My brand of bank wasn't on my way, so I went into Superstore to buy a $1 item and do cash back. I grabbed a 75¢ chocolate bar and it rang in for something silly like $3. I asked the guy to do the price correction, to which he cheerfully told me it was free. I then had to ask if I could just pay the 75¢ instead; as I needed to do the cash back.

The Scanning code of practice has gone on for awhile and i've earned a fair number of "free" stuff over the past couple of years thanks to lazy teenagers who work there. You just have to keep in mind how much you saw the item on the price label and review your reciept.
With superstore, you typically have to bring this to the customer service desk and they'll look into it.
I take it you never noticed the stickers that describe the practice at the cashiers at participating retail stores?

Some stores will give you hassle about it but you just have to be firm. Always just pay the amount and then take it to customer service, no point arguing in the lineup.
I had to remind the Wal-Mart manager who was arguing with me to read the policy. She wanted to just pay me the difference, I said no it's free (because it was less than $10). Once she read the policy no hassle anymore.

I disagree; or at least it depends. As I mentioned before, Superstore has this policy down pat and it takes them very little time to confirm the price issue. Then you have somewhere like WalMart where it takes longer, and they also often have a long line at customer service. So I should have to wait in another line to allow the store to correct their mistake?
I know it can suck for other people waiting; which should be the incentive for stores to train their cashiers on the policy and act on it quickly. Why take the incentive away?

One time at Wal-Mart they mistakenly put the Antifreeze under the same sign as the windshield washer fluid. Grabbed 2 cases for like $20.
I didn't realize until I got to the till and they came up as $11.97. Told them they had a different price on them and after about half an hour arguing with the manager he gave me the first one free and the rest at the posted price. First time I had done that.

If the item is less than $10, it's free. If the item is over $10, then $10 discount. Walmart is the worse at honouring this. If it was less than $10, they give you for free. If it was over $10, they don't knock $10 off the price?? Failing reading comprehension must be the main criteria to be hired at Walmart.

My crack cocaine dealer works the same way. If his price is higher then the market price (8-balls often fluctuate) and I'm able to prove to him that I can get a better price, I get the rock for free. He then adjusts his prices accordingly for maximum customer service.

My sister in law uses this to a frightening degree. She focuses so heavily on things being on sale that she will remember the exact price of everything in her cart during a grocery shop. She claims to get 1 free item nearly every single time she goes.

And im glad there are people like her. Nothing more annoying than going to a grocery store and them having wrong prices on their items or items placed on a shelf with an old price tag for a totally different item. Keeps them on their toes.
