Icon48 Who is your most talented team of all time?

When you look back through the ages you can find some really talented teams. You had the Oiler dynasty of the mid 80's and the Islander dynasty of the early 80's. The Flames, the Leafs and Red wings had their share of talented teams also.

The question being asked if you had to choose a team from a certain era which one would you choose?

As talented as the Oilers were I would have to choose the Montreal Canadiens team from 1975 -1979 era who won 4 straight Stanley Cups. Their win loss record is quite impressive over a 4 year span.

Of the 4 years the 76-77 team in particular is what I consider to be the best team ever assembled. That team won an impressive 60 games, tied 12 and lost only 8.

http://www.hockeydb.com/ihdb/stats/l...000451977.html

You had the legendary Ken Dryden in goal and on defence you had what has to be best top 4 defenceman in Robinson, Savard, Lapointe, and Bouchard.

Offence was supplied by the likes of Lafluer, Shutt, Lemaire, Houle, Cournoyer and Mahovilich.

Gainey and Risebrough were great on the defensive side of the game.

You had toughness in Bouchard who never backed down from a fight.

Over all a well balanced team that had all areas covered. A team that I think that would beat any team from any era.

So lets hear what everyone has to say.

Without a doubt, HC CKSA Moscow.

Quote:
CSKA won 32 Soviet regular season championships during the Soviet League's 46-year existence, including all but six from 1955 to 1989 and 13 in a row from 1977 to 1989.
CSKA was almost as dominant in the European Cup. They won all but two titles from 1969 to 1990, including 13 in a row from 1978 to 1990.
Quote:
One of the most feared lines in hockey history was the KLM Line of the 1980s. The name came from the last names of the three players, Vladimir Krutov, Igor Larionov, and Sergei Makarov. Together with defensemen Viacheslav Fetisov and Alexei Kasatonov, they were known as the Green Unit because they wore green jerseys in practice. The five-man unit formed a dominant force in European hockey throughout the decade.
And perhaps the most telling stat...

Quote:
CSKA played 36 games against NHL teams from 1975 to 1991 and finished with a record of 26 wins, 8 losses, and 2 ties.
Just an unreal team over the years. I'm not going to pretend to know everything about their history, but I would take them at their peak over any NHL team. My wish is that one day EA will incorporate their allstar team as a team you can control in that game.

I'd love to see an all-time HC CKSA lineup vs the all-time best NHL lineup.

CKSA was a stacked team that had all of Russia's best players on it. Being that it was basicaly an allstar team it would be a bit unfair to comapre their records against individual NHL teams.

That being said one of the greatest games ever played was the 1975 New Years eve clash against the Canadiens that resulted in a 3-3 tie.

Quote:
Montreal’s roster was so good that even today, Red Army captain Boris Mikhailov can recite the names without hesitation. “At that time, in the Soviet press, there was a lot about Montreal, Toronto, and Detroit, but mostly Montreal,” said Mikhailov. “We regarded Montreal as the top NHL team, because we knew about all their great players.”
Quote:
Boris Mikhailov: “On a club level, it was probably the best game ever played. It was very skillful, very intense.”

Vladislav Tretiak: “As far as I’m concerned, this is what the game of hockey is all about. I would love to play it over again.”

Red Fisher, Montreal Gazette: “The Habs deserved infinitely better, because on this night they made the Soviet Superman Theory look like Swiss cheese.”

Joe Pelletier, international hockey author: “Artistically, it was an absolute joy to watch.”

Szymon Szemberg, International Ice Hockey Federation spokesman: “It showed the Canadiens could play sophisticated hockey and skate with the Soviets, whereas most Europeans thought then that the NHLers could only dump and chase and rough it up.”

Talent wise, it really is almost impossible to argue with the mid 80s Oilers teams, though the mid 70s Habs are close. That said, my favorite team to watch was the late 70s/early 80s Islanders. Mike Bossy was a flat out ridiculous goal scorer and that team was MEAN.
