Default Gagner signs 3 year deal

From the Oilers twitter:
General Manager Craig MacTavish announces the #Oilers have agreed to terms with Sam Gagner (@89SGagner) on a 3-year contract.
https://twitter.com/EdmontonOilers/s...00456792604673

Hopefully it's closer to a 5M per year deal than 4M.

Edit: Mckenzie saying it's 4.8M.

That seems like a lot of a one-dimensional, streaky scorer with no physical presence to speak of.

Doesn't it?

Exactly. The heavier the anchor around the Oil's cap hit, the better!

That 8pt game likely made him an extra 1.5 M per season. %15 of his seasons point totals were in that one game.

I would say anything under 4M would be steal, anything over 5M would be massive overpayment. Since it's 4.8M, I'd say Gagner's camp won here, in my opinion. But it does take up 2 UFA years and with some of the contracts handed out July 5th, it's not the worst contract this summer. Just as long as they regret it at one point is all I'm hoping for.

Not the best deal
Not the worst deal
If it comes with no NTC/NMC then I think it is probably a win for Mac T
They need centers as bad as the Flames do considering RNH injury history over his short career so far

Where does he fit? RNH is obviously their top-line. I thought Perron was pencilled in on their 2nd line, but I guess not. I would have liked Gagner better at close to 4M, but I guess that was the best they could do. I just didn't see him as indispensable.

$4.8M for a player who has never scored 50 points in an NHL season.

@TSNRyanRishaug: Gagners deal has a no trade, no move as well. Was critical to the deal getting don

Now that makes the deal a win for Gagner
Kudos to him and his agent for bending over Mac T and taking advantage of his need for center man

Edit: apparently the NMC/NTC doesn't kick in until year's 2 and 3; they could trade him at the deadline this year if their playoff picture is looking weak

Doesn't seem like that bad of a deal at all. Funny reading some of the comments in here about a overpayment. If Gagner played for anyone but the oilers the mood would be much much different.

The 4.8 a year made it a win for Frodo, the no-trade makes it a destruction. Gagner has effectively thrown MacTavish into the fiery pits of Mount Doom.

Thats pretty much the definition of the Oilers.

I dont know about that. The ultimate fact of the matter is that Gagner isnt that good. I dont think hed have the numbers he has if he played for anyone else.

He better have a heck of year, cause the low cap at the deadline combined with the extra 2 years seems like he is stuck for the term otherwise.

I see this as a Cammi type deal, where he is a decent player way over paid, and with even more restrictive terms. Look how that has played out for the player and team that wants to move on.

I know he has a larger value to Edmonton considering his age and playing position, but anything more than about $4 million per is overpayment on any team IMO.

That's how I see it to. Anyone saying it's fair or that he is even close to worth it, is fooling themselves. Terrible deal for the Oilers, great deal for Sam and the rest of the NHLPA.
