Default Claude Giroux out 5-6 weeks after he splintered his index finger golfing

Quote:
"Philadelphia Flyers captain Claude Giroux had successful surgery this afternoon on his right index finger performed by Dr. Katherine Boyd at the Ottawa Civic Hospital in Ottawa, Canada. Giroux was golfing today when his golf club shattered and splintered into his index finger. Although there were no broken bones, there was some damage to his extensor tendons in his finger. He is expected to have a full recovery in 5-6 weeks."

Yeah I'm happy for you Claude Giroux, and I'm gonna let you finish, but Joe Sakic putting his hand into a snowblower was the best off-ice injury of all time! Of ALL TIME!!!

(followed closely by the pancake incident)

At least it's not as bad as Erik Johnson's golf cart injury that lost him his whole second pro season. I really think that stunted his development and kept him from reaching his potential.

Really hope Giroux can have another big year (90-100 points) and help the Flyers bounce back.

Andrew Sopel on the Canucks pulled a back muscle picking up a cracker.

Why? Seemed like a fairly freak accident to me and haven't heard of many golf injuries ever before this one where it caused a player to miss time. We might as well not let them go for a bike ride with their family.

Isn't his name Brent?

Freak accident for sure.

a comical comment from under the link:

"As a longtime golfer, I have NEVER seen a club "shatter" in someone's hand. However, what I HAVE seen is a club break in two when a pissed off golfer shanked his drive and slammed his club against a tree. Hmmmm....I wonder...."

Seems like injuries from golf are pretty few and far between. Not to mention all the charity money they probably raise from tournaments. I know most NHL contracts don't allow water sports such as wakeboarding and stuff though.

There's no provision that disallows water sports in particular, but basically anything is prohibited without written consent from the team per the Standard Player Contract:

Quote:
The Player and the Club recognize and agree that the Player's participation in other sports may impair or destroy his ability and skill as a hockey Player. Accordingly the Player agrees that he will not during the period of this SPC or during any period when he is obligated under this SPC to enter into a further SPC with the Club engage or participate in football, baseball, softball, hockey, lacrosse, boxing, wrestling or other athletic sport without the written consent of the Club, which consent will not be unreasonably withheld.
I wonder what would happen if a guy got hurt playing softball with his buddies. I assume typically it's viewed as one of those things that happens, but if either side really wanted to fight it out it could be interesting.

Interestingly "golf outings" are referred to in the CBA as "Traditional Hockey Practices" (in the context of what costs are counted when determining salary and cap hit).

How in God's name does a club shatter?

I just hope he's healed up in time for the Olympics.

Sharks' Irbe Bitten by His Dog
Published: August 25, 1994

San Jose Sharks goaltender ARTURS IRBE has declined to discuss what made his dog Rambo bite him on his left hand.

Irbe was recovering well from a fractured finger, nerve damage and a severed artery in his left hand after his dog bit him last month at his home in Latvia, team doctors said.

The 27-year-old All-Star goaltender returned to San Jose a month ago after surgery to recuperate. The injuries should not affect his career, the team physician, Dr. ARTHUR TING, said. The dog was destroyed and Irbe said he could not say why the dog would bite him. (AP)

Easy, just lose your temper and slam a club into a sturdy object at a high rate of speed. The graphite shaft will break and splinter quite badly. This is the only way this injury realistically could've happened.

If it happened while golfing at all. Glasses and bottles shatter quite easily as well.

Constant bag wear/rubbing can wear down the shaft to a point where it can break. A graphite shaft that breaks often splinters.
