Default 2013 Fishing Thread

Figured I would fire this up since nobody seems to want to talk fishing in the camping thread..

2013 Fishing season opens May 5th for the central zone here in Saskatchewan, will be heading out Sunday to get skunked and possibly be ice fishing, but just enjoying the fact that I am out on the lake living life.

Every year the GF comes fishing about two or three times, and every time I give her my good rod/reel and I use my 8 year old back up because it isn't as smooth of a ride. So this year I treatd myself to a new rod/reel combo on sale. Picked up a Shimano Symetre SY2500 FJ reel and a Fenwick Elite Tech Medium Walleye Series rod. Nothing super fancy, just a good solid all around secondary.

What does everyone have planned for the fishing season?

Going to treat yourselves and come fish some real lakes in your neighbouring province? :P

Fly-fishing for trout in a mountain stream >>>> trolling for pike in a lake

I agree, spent a lot of times out in the mountains these last 2 years and it is just gorgeous out there.

There is a lot to be said about the beauty of a Northern Sask lake as well though..

Spoiler!

Lets just agree we are both fortunate to have such great places to fish.

I can't wait for fishing time.

I'm headed down to Travers Reservoir for May Long.

But I've also got a beautiful secluded place in Northern SK that I head to for a week or 2 every year.

It's located about 2 hours North-West of Flin Flon.

I really, really want someone to teach me how to fish. Not fly fish, but regular fish. I did with my dad when I was a kid, but haven't been since I was 12 or so and have forgotten everything. I just don't know if I can kill them. Does it get any easier after you do it a few times? I just feel so bad for the fish when they are getting clobbered on the head. Is there a quick, guilt free way to kill them?

You could just catch and release. It feels great to let a fish go after getting a bite and reeling it in. Even better if you can take a picture before the release.

Hi, just started fishing again after about a 25 year break. Anyone know any fishing holes near Calgary? Fished Spray Lakes last weekend and my daughter (5 yo) caught two fish (both too small to keep) and my buddy's daughter (4 yo) caught one (1.5 footer). Not a nibble for my buddy and I.

I'll be heading to Pine Coulee next weekend or the weekend after. Can't wait, through there's nothing really that special to catch there....

Was hoping to be doing some dry fly fishing in and around Pincher Creek this weekend, but they have gotten pounded with rain over the last couple days and the streams are running muddy again.

This saves me from starting a new thread.

What are the licensing requirements for the city of Calgary and the province in a whole?

So I fished the Bow in Calgary the last three nights. Spin casting, Rapalas, spinners and spoons. The usual holes are not there, but I have seen fish so that is good news.

Just got back from Vancouver Island. Caught coho, sockeye, ling, rock, dog fish and even a skate. Good times but I will head back in 1 week to catch the spawn off the rivers.

Very interested in hearing updates on the Calgary and area stream for trout.

Ps itis catch and release all summer. Hopefully the fish weren't too negatively affected.

Had good luck this year. Pulled in 14lb Rainbow that was a hell of a fight. and a couple Dollies 4-8 lbs

Will get up pics soon, and have some more to show tomorrow if successful

Anyone been to Chain Lakes before? Taking the family out there so the kids can play on the beach and playground and I can be left in peace to do some fishing, hopefully.

I've been there. Its OK, but the fishing wasn't great while I was there...although I was fishing from a shore and its probably a lot better from a boat.

I'd be fishing from the shore too. Oh well. Should be fun anyways.

Went to the Glenmore Res for a change today with no luck, fished the weasel head for a few hours but it was too hot and no fish to be had. So I took my son to Carburn where we netted a trout and 5 pikes in 40 minutes. I hope to head down to the bow again 2-3 times this week during the evenings to see how things have changed near 22x.
