Everyone's favourite free market conservative television station lost 17 million dollars last year. And they state that they will continue to lose money unless there is a government mandate that all Canadians with cable television pay 4 dollars each for Sun TV.
Quote:
An application to tack about $4 per year on to the cable bills of every subscriber across the country was filed with the CRTC on Monday. The next morning, Sun News took their campaign to the people, with a social media campaign called Canadian TV First.
The effort emphasizes the “do or die” state of affairs at the channel, which is losing about $17 million a year some 21 months into its existence.
How else will Canadians be informed about the inherent evils of government overreach unless Sun TV receives a government mandate that their station be beamed into each and every cable subscribers home?

No, absolutely not. SunTV is broke because most of their programming is crap.
And while we're at it let's quit dumping truckloads of money into the CBC. Same thing applies to them, if they had to survive on the free market and their programming they would be bankrupt.
What the hell are they losing money on, it sure as hell isn't production values, the damn station looks like Waynes World's older rightwing brother, if they spend more than 500 bucks a day to keep the channel running I would be suprised.

Looks more like an SCTV production to me.

I'd like to state that they should continue to lose money until they actually produce quality programming rather then just wagering that eventually people will be drawn to obnoxious personalities. Yuck, I don't know a single person be they left or right on the political spectrum that doesn't think that Sun TV is just awful.
It was just a bad idea to begin with the Public & Current Affairs television market was already over-served when they jumped in. Quebecor should just cut it's losses.
But, isn’t Sun News anti-mandatory on everything? Watching Sun News doesn’t bring many surprises; you’re more likely to get variations on a theme watching the Fireplace Channel. So, mere minutes spent watching its continuing hilarity confirm that it’s against folks being obliged to do anything they don’t wanna do. Like, you’d think, pay for a TV channel they don’t want to watch. On the day Sun News went on the air, Levant declared, “We’re talking about truth and freedom. If you love freedom like I do, it’s a pretty happy day.” Well, sunshine, “freedom,” also means freedom from not having to pay for your channel.
I was going to go with SCTV but the bad skype based interviews with the image lag were way below SCTV's standards, for those it was Waynes World or some random wackos You Tube channel.
Correct me if I am wrong, aren't these clown the champions of the "screw CBC and their public funding" cause?
Because if my memory serves me correct, I am pretty sure they are.
Yes, though there is a technical difference here.
Every single taxpayer has to fund the CBC whether they want to or not.
Sun TV is asking that every cable subscriber pay. Nominally, you have the choice to pay or not by keeping or canceling cable.
Not that it makes it any less ridiculous. Cable channels that have high viewership in key demographics - like TSN and Sportsnet - almost certainly don't get $4 per subscriber. Little watched news channels won't come close. It would be interesting to see what Sun TV does get as a subscriber fee today, however. Especially comapred to CTV Newsnet.
I actually think there is plenty of money to be made with this concept but someone with actual startup capital really needed to be involved. You know, someone with the weight behind them to get the channel included in necessary cable packages. Like, oh I don't know, the CBC.
Okay probably not the CBC, but say Bell or Rogers started a channel of this sort, I think it actually has some potential.

I would be pretty shocked if they didn't have 10 or 12 "free market capitalism" cheerleaders at the top paying themselves outrageous salaries.
