Should probably just 'honor' it.

it's something that really pisses me off and I still don't get it. Just retire 2, 12, 14 and 34 in a proper way, FFS.

I'm hoping the Forever a Flame thing was just a one-off because MacInnis is with the Blues org and they still retire numbers properly. For the record, I still think they still should have retired #2 properly.

I guess they have officially given up hope that he'll come back and play for them.

I'm okay with not retiring numbers. I love seeing the banner with MacDonald's #9 hanging from the rafters but I would also be okay with seeing another player wearing the #9 on the Flames.
The same goes for 2, 12, 14, 34. All were great players and I really appreciate what each of them has done for the team but if we draft a kid who is going to be the future of the team and he has played all his life with one of those numbers, I would rather he keep playing with that number and possibly put another one up in the rafters instead of forcing him to switch.

Possibly the best d-man of all time. Players in the past may have had more success, but standards in the past were lesser. If you were to take all the players who've ever played defence in their prime, Lidstrom might be the best.

For me it's:
Orr
Lidstrom
Bourque
(Shore and Harvey in there too, but hard to compare)
Then a bunch of guys in no particular order - Coffey, Niedermayer, Stevens, Leetch, Macinnis, Chelios, etc...soon to include Chara and Pronger in that conversation.

Is Lidstrom the best European-born player ever?
