LeBrun: Salary Cap projected to be $72-$74 million next year
http://espn.go.com/blog/nhl/post/_/i...t-anything-big
Quote:
Still, what governors will be told by the league leadership this week is that despite all the concern, as long as there isn't any significant change (downward) in the Canadian dollar between now and June 30, the salary cap next season is projected to be somewhere between $72 million and $74 million, up from the current $69 million. The governors will actually get a more precise figure though a source told ESPN.com it should be in that range.

if the upper limit is indeed between 72 and 74, the floor will be somewhere between 53 and 55m. Flames have 46.8m on the books. The only UFAs on the Flames are Glencross, Ramo, McGrattan and Diaz. Noteable RFAs include Backlund, Jooris, Bouma, Byron, Ferland and Baertschi.

The majority of those players are pretty easy re-signs though with players who are mostly AHL fodder. The Flames are in amazing position next year with the top 6 being all signed to reasonable (or entry level) deals. It will be the 2016-17 offseason in which Treviling will be busy with Hudler, Colborne, Monahan, Gaudreau, Granlund and Giordano need to be resigned.

This will be a good chance for Treliving to get Backlund locked up long term on a good value contract.

I am fairly confident that Giordano and Monahan contract extensions will be worked on this offseason and announced in the summer.

Yeah Gio should be getting a raise and his cap hit will be at least 6.0. I don't think getting to the floor will be that hard

his new contract won't start until 2016 in either case though. In 2015, his cap hit is 4.025
if the cap is 72m, the floor is ~53.2m. If the cap is 74m, the floor is ~54.8m. So the Flames will have to spend at least ~7m to reach the cap which shouldn't be hard exercise. You re-sign Backlund, Ramo and Bouma and you're probably over the floor already ... even without any bigger UFA acquisition, I guess the Flames will reach ~57-60m quite easily.

That's a touch optimistic I think.

What's going to be interesting here is our goalie situation.
Ortio is on a 1 way next year and we have Hiller signed. With the way Ramo is playing, you'd have to think they want to re-sign him, but then who's the odd man out? Doubtful that Ortio would clear waivers to stay down in ADK

1 way contracts only equal what they get paid now, nothing to do with waivers. pretty sure waiver eligibility has to do with games played or something now

yep. It's true though that Ortio would have to clear waivers next season. He's only exempt for 4 years or 72 games, and next season will be his 5th contract year.

If PK is worth $9 million a year, then Gio is certainly worth more than $6 mill - his new deal I expect will be north of $7.5 mill per annum - more if he wins the Norris and the Flames make the playoffs.

In my ideal world, I'd like to see Ramo re-signed to be our starter, Hiller traded at the deadline (probably worth a 2nd rounder?), Ortio become the backup and play in 25-30 games, and Gillies become the starter in Adirondack.

What? Hiller's value is a second round pick? Better assets should be required to move one of the goalies in this tandem. Besides, nothing sorted out yet between the two goalies. for all we know, Ortio's the odd man out.
I get the fact that some will prefer Ramo over Hiller. I prefer them both over Ortio. Gillies if he keeps this up is going to be in Addy next season.
Why tinker with success on the main roster when the cog gets replaced on the farm instead. Most likely an upgrade too.
You can probably package Ortio in a trade to upgrade a roster spot on D or RW.
