Default Dozens die as Spanish train derails

Terrible train accident in Spain today.

Quote:
A train has derailed in north-western Spain, killing at least 45 people and injuring many more, officials in the Galicia region have said.

All 13 carriages of the train, which was travelling from Madrid to Ferrol, came off the tracks near the city of Santiago de Compostela.

Images from the scene showed bodies strewn near ruined carriages, and emergency crews searching the wreckage.

This doesn't seem like a "these days" type thing ... too fast around a corner in a train, I think that's been a problem for a long time.

I agree. There were probably more train derailments in the 1800s when trains were a new thing.
In fact I just saw one recently in the Lone Ranger movie.

Lies. No one saw that movie.

They should have built a monorail, as there is no chance the track could bend.

They've released video of the crash.

It's not graphic, but just in case...

NSFW!

78 dead now...well over 100 injured.

That video of it derailing is terrifying and shows how damn fast the thing was travelling. Hard to tell what happened exactly to cause that second car to jump the track...but catastrophic none the less.

Its absolutely devastating how many people have been killed and hurt. I take some comfort in pictures like the one below that has been circulating the internet this morning showing the lineup at an emergency blood donation center at 2 AM in the region where the crash happened:

I heard this morning that the engineer is under criminal investigation, they estimate that he was doing nearly twice the recommended speed when he hit that corner. If that's the case its not mechanical fault or an accident its manslaughter.
