Tried to search to see if there was a thread about GPS but couldn't find anything. Can anyone recommend a good basic model? I would quite like one I could talk to if that is possible. It would probably never need multiple destinations in one trip as I know this can be a concern. Is Lifetime Updates a good feature? Help me guys!!

If you weren't the only post in this thread I would have thought this was a bump from 2005. Do you have a smart phone? They all have very good GPS systems that you can talk to and they can talk back, plus free updates. Maybe you're looking for a back country GPS...I imagine that would be better than a phone.

If' you don't have data on your phone, or are traveling in the US and don't have/want to pay for data roaming, than a GPS unit is quite helpful.
I have an older Garmin Nuvi that I use in the US and it seems to be just fine. It is not updatable, but gets me where I need to go accurately. If you don't want to drop a bunch of money on a new one, used may be a way to go.

The new goggles also do nothing.

If it's an Android or iPhone, you can cache maps for offline use with the Google Maps application.

Or you can find free and pay applications as well, I'd rather buy a map app for my phone than buy a whole separate device.

Definitely get one with free lifetime downloads. Mine doesnt have it and its so outdated.

Magellan GPS are ones you can talk to.

Another feature to look for, is it the GPS says street names or not. My old one used to just say "Turn left in 3km" and I would have no idea which specific street to turn on. There was a ding sound when I reached the correct street, but sometimes it just wasnt enough time to make the turn. I much prefer the ones that say "Turn left in 3km on ABC Street".

I wouldn't pay for the free updated maps if it is more than a few bucks. A Garmin Nuvi can usually be had for 50$ if you watch for a sale. Unless you are in a brand new community it should be good for years. In five years it is far more likely that you will have a phone with data and the free live updates. Five years ago very few people had them and now almost everyone does, in five more years it will provably be a given. Either way I can't see the GPS still working and useful in five years.

As a side note with the fixes to Glonass and Galieleo and Beidou being launched over the next few years your GPS will be a poor second cousin to the new GNSS systems and you will most likely upgrade anyway.

I've got this one. Nothing else to compare it to but I'm happy with it.

I recommend you become friends with somebody who works at Dynastream (Garmin) in Cochrane. 45% discounts on all Garmin products. Got a sweet deal on a Forerunner 610 and accessories.

I just picked up this Magellan 5220 on sale for $100. I haven't set it up yet, so can't comment. Doing some searches, I can't find any brand or model that gets great reviews.
