Default Natural Gas Hookup Question

My lazy home builder didn't install a valve on my outside natural gas connection. There is a pipe coming out of the side of the house, but it's just got a cap on it.

Do I need to call a pipe fitter or plumber to get a valve put on it, or is this something I can do myself?

If I need someone, does anyone do this, or recommend someone?

It's one of those easy jobs that unfortunately you have to call someone for.

Why do you need a valve? If you are going to do stuff for the future, why not wait till you are ready for the installation? To valve and cap it off you are going to have to turn it off downstream then depending how much gas is in the pipe, possibly drain out the gas, then maybe purge with nitrogen, then test. Could be a lot of work for one valve, when you could just wait?

Yes, I want to hook up my grill.

Thanks all. I figured I couldn't do it.

I'm not sure I could trust myself with a NG BBQ. I'd be afraid of leaving it on indefinitely.

Done that, you end up with a really clean ash white grilling surface.

Crank the valve at the meter (some might have a pad lock mine doesn't), turn on your gas fireplace and furnace for 15 minutes to burn some of the gas off. Crack off the plug and pop the valve on. Now hook up your BBQ and turn on the gas for 5 minutes or so to purge it, then shut it off. Give it another 5 to fully dissipate into the atmosphere, turn it back on and light the BBQ and voila.

There should be a shutoff where that line branches off from the main.

Turn it off there and install your valve.

If you live near me in new Brighton, please call someone to do this job. If you live anywhere else, have a go at it. If something goes sideways you'll be immortalized on the 6 and 11 pm news.......
