Icon45 Leafs sign Paul Ranger (1yr, $1 mil)

https://twitter.com/DarrenDreger/sta...72873651605506

interesting career path quit hockey for 3 years to come back to the NHL...

Edmonton was rumored to be heavily after him because of the Eakins connection

Thats actually a really good move. He'll solidify their back end quite well.

Its good to see Ranger back in the NHL.

Promising defenseman for the Lightning who just up and told the Tampa Bay Lightning he would like to quit hockey without publicly giving a reason as to why 3 years ago.

I'll be surprised if this works out. Three years out of the league is an eternity for a pro athlete.

So 28 year old AHLer with issues... seems like a solid signing. Go Leafs!

He was touted as being a very good D for the Lightning and then he just up and quit hockey. Looks like he spent last year with the Leafs farm team and is now looking to rejoin the NHL.

Considering he is now in his "prime" years it will be very interesting to see how well he resumes his career. Could be a good signing for the Leafs.

Wasn't the issue that he was afraid of flying or something like that... or was that just speculation?

I dont think theres ever been a confirmation of what the issue was.

He just quit hockey for undisclosed personal reasons. And now he wants to unquit.

Quite reasonable. I'd probably want to 'unquit' a $800,000 minimum wage job too.

Wonder if the Leafs will drop someone on their blueline? Is Rielly ready to make the jump to the NHL? Franson is still RFA and rumors all summer that they are looking to dump Dion so I could see another shoe dropping on the leafs backend before the season starts.

I wouldn't call him an AHLer.. before leaving the Lightning he was averaging close to 25 minutes a night and by all reports out of the Marlies looks to be good enough for the NHL.

I heard he quit because he's scared to death of winning the Stanley Cup. Him and his agent eventually realized he can still play in Toronto risk free, likely for the rest of his career.

This guy was well on his way to becoming a top pairing defenseman before he quit.

From the sound of things, he only wanted to play in Ontario, even if it's in the AHL. That's just my uninformed opinion.

so he quit hockey and wanted out of the spot light and now he's in TO. From one extreme to another.

I actually wanted him to sign in NY.
