Default Residential window film/tinting

I have some south west facing windows that I'd like to keep uninstructed while blocking out the heat and UV.

My research finds that these products are just like car tinting however they shouldn't be applied to triple pane windows. The manufacturers website don't comment on these so I go to the CP brain trust.

Does anybody have any experience or knowledge with this?

I can't help other than to say we installed them on our west facing windows and they helped quite a bit. I would say it reduced the heat about 5 degrees in the room.

I'm also curious to know if anyone else has had this done and can speak from experience. We have three south facing windows that turn our back room into a sauna, and definitely need to do something to make that room usable in the summer months.

Pylon, if you could PM me details as well that would be greatly appreciated!

Make that three Pylon! I've been thinking aboutt his for 2 years now for some high windows in my main room that's open for two stories. I would rather a tint than remote shutters...

The new goggles also do nothing.

Yeah I've got 3 stories of huge south facing windows and the house is like a sauna if we don't keep all the blinds closed, sometimes even with them closed my bedroom can get well over 30 degrees, so have always wondered about this.

I've talked to the window manufacturer (All Weather Windows) and the warranty department confirms that they will not honour the warranty of any windows that have this film applied to them. When they are triple pane windows. Although it isn't documented in their literature, the film adds too much heat between the panes which will lead to cracks.

If you're applying these films to double or single panes, you're fine.

Unfortunately, there is a product available where a coating is impregnated to the glass during the manufacturing process to lessen the heat transfer/UV however it is requires the purchase of whole new windows.

So if anybody is keeping track, heat gain via the windows is one of the reasons why BBQ and firepit smoke grinds my gears in that respective thread.
