I understand why they went with that name.. you can't have 2 divisions called 'atlantic', and Northeast doesn't work considering some teams in the other division...

Why did they ever get rid of the Campbell Conference.. Norris, Smythe Divisions and Prince of Wales Conference..Adams, Patrick Divisions?

I like the metropolitan division. It's new but has some character. It's out of place in a world of central Atlantic and pacific. The other three should have better names. Not the old ones, but something with similar panache and a fresh new approach.

because when Bettman took over he made the NHL look exactly like the NBA, from divisional and conference names, to the conference playoff format

I would assume that the name change was to make it easier for new fans to figure out. Part of the plan to sell the game to new markets/fans.

They shouldve named it the Sprawl division. Or the Columbus is screwed division.
As for the atlantic, Tampa is on the Gulf of Mexico, which is basically the Atlantic and the rest of the teams are on the Great Lakes/St. Lawrence. I don't think it's too much of a reach. Calgary and Edmonton being in the pacific diviision is worse.

Pacific = Coastal Division
Central = Mainland Division
Atlantic = Great Lakes Division
and
Metro(politan) Division
