This is one FA I'd like the Flames to go after. He only has one year of NHL experience under his belt, and looked good for most the year. That being said he did play with Dats and Z for a lot of it. He's a right-handed shot, and can play the wing or center.
We have a lot of cap room. I was thinking 3 years/ 10.5 mil to get it done.
Thoughts?

Where would we put him? The flames as of now have 2 to many forwards.

I'd like to give him a shot here, but we really need to move out some bodies.

Definitely in favor of picking up Brunner.
He looked too much like a seasoned vet to be a rookie. I was really impressed. And he's a piece you could still build with at 27.

Was also thinking that the Flames should target him. Saw many Wings games and was very impressed with him, even looked good during his first postseason. I get the feeling though that he wants more than what his value is now, I don't see how the Wings would have not re-signed him if his demands were reasonable.

His scoring really slowed down as the season progressed, but I still think there's something there.

The Flames could find ways to move bodies around to make him fit. We have way too many bottom 6 players.

Watched him a lot because I had him on my fantasy team, he's really good offensively but he's small, soft and terrible defensively

On top of what everyone has mentioned, I feel that Brunner would be a great role model and mentor to have around for Sven. If we can find space for him in the roster, then I'd love to have him on the team. I feel like he has the potential to become much better defensively and offensively in the NHL.

He really doesn't bring anything this team doesn't already have in spades, and it's not like he is young enough to be a part of a rebuild. He is 27, by the time the Flames are pulling out of their tanking phase he would be well past his prime.
No thanks.

Im not really interested unless you ship out cammy and stempniak but since those players will have more value at the deadline I think you are better off waiting until next year to sign a player like this.

This team is desperate for a top 2 RW. What we have right now is so brutal. We could probably get rid of 4 LW and we'd still have too many.

This would be a half-assed 'win now' move. The fans have bought in to a couple years of suckage; I think we preserve the first year of monahan's elc and send him back to junior, hold on to the vets until the deadline with a mind to bringing back another 1st rounder, and dive for the bottom. Retool next summer after we draft top 3.

@HeleneStJames: Damien Brunner pushing for $3-3.5 million per season, 2-3 year deal. Price tag too high for Red Wings.

This team is overloaded with small skilled players: Cammalleri, Hudler ,Baertschi, Stajan, Brodie, Butler, Smith and Russell... plus Gaudreau, Grandlund and Byron waiting in the wings.
It IS desperate for players who can win puck battles, jam the opponents crease, score the greasy goals and keep the Flames crease clear.
There are about 2-3 highlight skilled goals every night (8 games). This is out of 40-50 total goals scored. If only highlight goals counted the Flames would be challenging for a home play-off spot.
PASS on Brunner. PASS on Mason Raymond and should have PASSED on Russell.

This team is desperate for a hell of a lot more than a top 2 RW, I'm afraid. Now is not the time to be adding spare parts like Brunner. Now is the time to suck hard so in a few years we can have a core to add these kinds of players around. We just have to accept that for the next two seasons at minimum this team is going to be really, really bad.

Almost no time with Dats. 70% of the time he was on the ice so was Z... and Franzen 35% and Fippula 25% were his centres.
How well would he do with a Stajan sized centre and Cammalleri/Baertschi on the wing?
He should have played for free last year for a chance to play with Zetterberg.
This year Alfredssen left his only NHL Team ever (that is a playoff contender) for a chance to play with Zetterberg.

No question, but RW has the biggest holes. If his contract is only two years, that will be right about when some of the young, up and comers will be ready for a shot.
I do agree that his size is an issue. I think this year is going to be painful watching this small team getting hemmed in our own end.
