Kind of risky consdiering his age, although he is still reasonably productive as of now.

The Devils are so weird. The let Parise and Clarkson walk because they can't afford them, and overpay for guys like Elias and Zubrus (not to mention Kovalchuk).

Leading scorer for them last season, and a solid player, but this contract takes him to 40.
Devils must be one of, if not THE oldest team in the league no?

Elias has been Mr Reliable for NJ but eventually the wheels or his hands will go. Maybe this is the contract they regret this time. No doubt he has been a quality career leader for them.

I bet Iggy is looking at this deal and thinking "excellent"...
Iggy will get something similar if not more in the open market - 1 year younger with similar numbers.
Unless he takes a significant discount, there is no way Iggy takes less than 5.5 mill a year.

Although I'm not disagreeing with Elias/Zubrus/Kovalchuk being overpaid, this isn't exactly true. The Devils offered Parise the same $$$ Minnesota offered - Parise chose to play with the Wild. They'll let Clarkson walk because he'll be significantly overpaid once this free agency period is done.

Elias has only missed 2 games in the past 3 years. He can win in the playoffs. He is a leader on the team. etc etc etc.
He got exactly what he deserved, a fair contract and to finish his career in NJ.

Good on him for cashing in. Elias is one of the most underrated players in the NHL.

P Elias has been nothing but a point producer for Lou, I don't see this as being a bad contract.

He's scored the most points in the Devil's history and he's not by any stretch a bad player today. Good reward for long and loyal service.

I think the question will be will Patrick make it to the HoF? Had the Devils beat the Kings a couple years back, it would have been a no-brainer. The points say yes, but he's put up those points rather quietly and without the stardom those points usually merit.

Last one team legacy guy for a while.
I guess Datsyuk and Doan are on the horizon...maybe the sedins down the road...probably a few others I'm missing.

Do you think Ray Whitney will make the HoF? He has 1000pts and one cup.
What about Andreychuk?
Elias should make 1000 next year and has two cups with two more finals.
