I found what looks like a loose diamond on my driveway. I feel like 98% sure that is probably just something cheap, but how can you tell for sure?
I tried scratching glass with it, and it made a big old scratch. Is that a real test or just a myth? I almost through it away, but if it is someone's that fell out of a ring, or something, I'lll put some effort into finding an owner.

Did you check to see the condition of the soles of your shoes?

Show it to your wife. If her panties suddenly and inexplicably drop, you've got diamond!

Try smashing it with a hammer, in theory the diamond won't get crushed.
My apologies if you were trying to play an expensive practical joke on the OP, but that is not true. A diamond will shatter if you hit it with a hammer.
It is fairly easy to identify a diamond if you give it to the right person, but this is getting more difficult due to advancements in diamond alternatives.
Besides hardness, I would look for imperfections, but I couldn't say for sure what cleavage is correct. A pro would know for sure since they see way more than I would.
If you don't feel like keeping the rock you found, you can burn everything and see what happens, a diamond should burn basically when other diamonds burn.
I assume this rock is cut and polished? If it looks nice, a hand lense should show strange things inside the diamond, but even that is sketchy.
Either way, it probably looks nice and no harm mounting in jewelry.
