Default How good is Ovechkin? Makes All Star team at two positions.

He's named 1st team allstar for RW & 2nd team allstar for LW.

LOL

Bob McKenzie bashing the PHWA that didn't know he played RW this season

Ovechkin named 1st team all-star RW AND 2nd team all-star LW embarrassing. Some guys hard to label as L or R but not Ovie, not this year.

Bob McKenzie@TSNBobMcKenzie5m
The really sad part, IIRC, is PHWA instructed voters via email that Ovechkin is a RW this season yet he still gets voted 2nd team LW. Unreal

Any of the writers who voted for him at the wrong position should have their voting privileges revoked.

Congrats to the PHWA for managing to turn a vote into something more ridiculous and embarrassing than the HHOF vote.

One would have to believe that Ovechkin was nearly unanimous at RW. And if one believes that, that implies that some of the writers didn't get his position wrong, but that they voted for him twice.

Supposedly he bumped Hall from his spot:

James Mirtle@mirtle36m
The player left off the all-star teams due to Ovechkin being named twice (once at wrong position) was Taylor Hall. @mc79hockey

James Mirtle@mirtle6m
Here's the thing, too: Taylor Hall is on his entry level contract. He likely would have a substantial bonus for being on an all-star team.

mc79hockey@mc79hockey7m
So I think it's fair for Taylor Hall to ask: who are the 45 morons who stole $50K from him?

My post in another thread recently about my feelings for the voters.

Not just homers rigging it like we saw in 2002 but guys who think Harding deserved a vote for the Calder. Harding, who played 3 games in a season that saw Malkin, Stastny, Staal and Kopitar make very impressive debuts. When Mitchell is getting Norris votes recently, and Visnovsky is getting a Hart vote (the year Perry won it..) I mean obviously less than credible people are voting.

Even some writers voting on the awards have come out and said that there's some very strange and peculiar voting, and with Norris especially it's far too point dependent anyways.

Quote:
1. ALEX OVECHKIN, WSH 591 (103-23-7) 6
First Team, 2 Second Team
2. Martin St. Louis, T.B. 440
(36-74-38) 1 First Team, 4 Second Team
3. Patrick Kane, CHI 437 (36-63-68)
Don't know the total amount of voters but Ovechkin had 133 votes ranking him in the top 3. St. Louis had 148 and Kane had 168. Subban had 178 voters put him in the top 3 for defenseman.

That means at least 45 voters didn't select Ovechkin as a top 3 right winger in the NHL this season. Which lines up nicely with his left wing votes:

Quote:
2. Alex Ovechkin, WSH 217 (41-4-0)

Yeah. So he was unanimous, but fully 1/4th of the PHPA is functionally ######ed. That is hardly surprising given the general opinion of numerous hockey writers.

These are the same people that think P.K. Subban is the best defenseman in the NHL, so not surprising.

Most of the media have less hockey intelligence than a lot of dialed-in fans. That's why they hate forums like this so much.

Should also mention that these are the people who managed to vote Theodore to the Hart over Iginla by some French homers leaving Iggy off the ballot completely.

In other words, the PHWA as a collective group vote the way you would expect the kids over at HFboards to vote.

Just goes to show that when you hear some sports media people on tv and the radio pontificating about things, there is a good chance they're spitballing stuff under the premise that they are experts.

This also explains why some in the eastern sports media will continue for years saying the Flames are old and have a limited prospect pool. They see the Caps all the time and these writers can't figure out what position Ovechkin plays. How are they going to know to any depth about the Flames aside from regurgitating old info, cliche's and stuff they read up on 2 minutes before going on the air.

So, is the NHL leaving this without changing it? Being on the First All star team AND the second all star team is no more absurd than him being on the First All Star team in both positions.

I think it's safe to say that everyone would find that absurd.

NHL is stupid for not changing this on their own. Stupidity all around.

And there you have it kids. Those of you that are f-ups with no real creative smarts, skills, or a likeable personna there is hope for you. All is not lost as you will always have a shot at a lasting career with the PHWA.

If the Flames acquired Ovechkin tomorrow, 45 hockey writers would be laughing at Feaster for wasting assets on yet another LW.

Forget Ovechkin..........how in the heck does Beauchemin make an all star team?

Hard to take these 'All Star' teams too seriously.
