Team will use compliance buyout for DiPietro -- $1.5 million owed for next 16 seasons will not count against cap.

Guess the writing was on the wall as soon as Schneider was dealt that a Luongo/Dipietro swap was not in the cards.

Best of luck to the guy. Quality person.

The good news for Islander fans is that Yashin only has 2 more years on his buyout.

Maybe he can rebuild his game in Europe. Injuries have destroyed his athleticism.

He should get a backup job somewhere. He will sign somewhere for cheap on a 1 year deal. As other have mentioned, a really good person.

Didn't Luongo get traded for Dipietro already?

I'm surprised they're going to use a compliance buyout on him and not a regular buyout like they did with Yashin so they'd have the money they're spending count against the cap and help them get to the floor.

Wish him the best. If his game turned around and he could stay healthy, I would welcome him on the flames

Admittedly never watched him in the AHL, but a save percentage of under 0.900 in that league is a bit worrisome. If he looked like he was finding his stride and getting into a groove, maybe, but with so many goalies hitting UFA that don't have the injury risk I'd be a bit surprised if he lands a backup job to start the season.

Sure Bryzgalov, Thomas and Emery all have their question marks and might not be as good of a locker room guy but they have at least shown signs of being NHL goalies in the last 5 years. Could even list Khabibulin with them as well. Labarbera put up decent numbers, not that it's hard to do as a goalie in Phoenix, and so did Khudobin in Boston. Griess' numbers in San Jose were decent, if not limited. While Nabokov hasn't signed with the Islanders yet. And then you got your regular 1-year contract backups like Ellis and oddman out goalies like Hedberg now that Schneider's in New Jersey.

I don't know how many teams need a goalie, and likely those that do will end up playing musical-goalies with the ones listed above but I think DiPietro, if he wants to play in NA, might have to consider playing in the AHL again. At least until he proves himself or the backup of whatever NHL team he signs with flops.

Hopefully he can move on and have a fulfilling life. He's set financially and has an income stream for over a decade. Enjoy life, your family, etc. If you're competitive and need a fix, take up golf or another sport where your health isn't at risk. Hockey didn't work out for him but it set him and his family for life financially.

Wang has to make room for the 7 year 35 million dollar contract he's going to offer Jagr

With their cap floor issues, im surprised they didnt want it to actually count against the cap.

I'm sure they wanted it. They just couldn't get it.

Unfortunately for the Islanders, so did their GM Garth Snow, and owner Charles Wang

Exactly!! I am not a bit feel sorry for the guy because he's already set financially. He is one of the lucky ones because some players never even make any money in the NHL before they retire due to injury. DiPietro can just do other things and it doesn't have hockey.
