Default Conservative senators are revolting!

It's not just the Conservative backbenchers who are getting into spats with Stephen Harper, now some senators are getting in on the action too.

Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s office has issued a stern warning to Conservative senators who helped gut a controversial bill that would force unions to publicly disclose details of their spending.

On Wednesday, 16 Tory senators bucked the government’s wishes and joined their Liberal counterparts in approving a number of amendments to bill C-377, while another four abstained.

When was the last time the Senate strongly opposed the House of Commons and the PM?

Just a guess but probably the GST.

There might have been something in Harper's first mandate when the Senate was still stacked with Liberals.

The upper house needs an enema anyways, maybe this will push things along.

They sure are!

I don't really know where I stand on this issue. I think some public unions should disclose SOME information on spending, especially the salaries, benefits, and expenses in upper management. On the other hand I don't think much can come from tracking every dollar. Also, when it comes to unions that have nothing to do with me, like factory labour or corrugated cardboard workers, what right does the public have to that info?

Lastly, I think we deserve more information on Senate and MP expenses, let's start there first.

The same disclosure rules and same levels of transparency should apply to unions as apply to employers and public servants. Pretty simple really.
