Oh the irony - Rumour suggests Flames going after Corban Knight
After a heated CP jihad to take him out to support Johnny Gaudreau in the Hobey Baker race.... Edmonton media personality Bob Stauffer is suggesting that Calgary is going to attempt to sign 6'2, 210lb Center Hobey Baker candidate (top 10 finalist) Corban Knight.
His rights with the Panthers are set to expire on August 15th, and he's made it clear he has no interest in signing with them.

My guess is that the #Flames will be making a deal for Corban Knight's rights
Stats this past season were pretty good for the big two-way Center. 16G, 33A, 49P in 41G Also of particular note... finished 60% in the faceoff dot (averaging 58% over the past three seasons). He had a 19-game point streak, longest at UND in 25 years.
What do we think CP, do we want Feaster to go after this kid? He's a local kid, from High River.

Which is interesting, considering he is currently training with Jordan Eberle and there were many hoping that Edmonton would go after him.

What doest Stauffer know that he isn't instructed to say by Kevin Lowe? Not a stretch to think the Flames may be interested given their interest in US college players under the current regime.

I find the "training with Jordan Eberle" thing that people keep throwing around very odd to use as a reason why someone might go to Edmonton. All that means is that the player is training with players in Calgary, most top players that are in Calgary during the summer will probably train together, that doesn't mean that Eberle will brainwash them all into Oiler drones. It's not like Iginla convinced every player in Kelowna to play with Calgary.

I was more referring to the fact that much like Calgary, a big, two-way Center would be something that Edmonton desperately needs at this point in time.
Will be interesting to see what kind of return he brings in, while Florida is going to lose him for nothing lots of teams will be interested. That said he's just a few weeks away from free agency so if he's targeting one or two teams Florida will have zero leverage.
Would be nice to see Calgary pick up another decent prospect on the cheap. What do people think the value would be... a 3rd rounder sound right?
His NHL equivalency is 40 points on an 82 game season, so similar production to Backlund and Baertschi. He's in between them in term of age. Backlund is 20, Knight's 22, and Backlund's 24. Gaudreau's 19 and higher than all of them at 49 points NHLE.

Ya I wasn't directing that at you per se, more just venting about what I keep reading on twitter and HF right now, as well as the trade speculation thread.

I think his free agency begins Aug 15th. Teams might want to know before Aug 15th, so that is why they will offer something for him. I don't see why the flames would have to offer anything more than a 5th or a "mey" prospect.

How about you turn it into something bigger?
Florida knows they are going to lose him for nothing, so offer them something substantial, to help them out. But in the process, make a deal for the #2 overall pick.
To FLA
Mark Giordano, Alex Tanguay, 2013 6th overall, 2013 22nd overall, 2013 28th overall
To CAL
Rights to Corban Knight and 2013 2nd overall pick
I don't know if the Oilers have much room to be handing out 1.5 million dollar entry level deals, they only have 10 mil in cap room left and they still need to re-sign Gagner, Paajarvi and a couple more pieces (1B goalie and a defenceman at least). They might not be right up against the cap but it'll be close.
Really hope the Flames get Knight. Have watched him a lot at North Dakota and he's one of the best two-way centers I've seen in college hockey in the last decade. I see him as a better Bozak as far as recent college players go.

@Bob_Stauffer: For those asking @CorbanKnight holds the cards in where he goes. Am told he has family connection to #Flames. Good opportunity for him there

People should start tweeting him to sway him our way haha.. I hope Feaster can get his rights asap, rather than wait till Aug.15th and have him possibly change his mind or have someone else persuade him to sign elsewhere.
Come to Calgary! With our lack of center depth he will get the best opportunity he could ask for.
