Default Sikome Lake

Im looking for somewhere in Calgary to practice open water swimming. I dont know anyone in a lake community so thats no an option. Google tells me Sikome is free and open to the public but I cant find any recent reviews of it. Would it be an okay lake for open water swimming or is this more of a lake to take kids to splash around?

Not the best place to swim, though cleaner than in previous years.

i have not swam in either place, but I was wondering if Chestermere or Ghost Lake is an option.

Not sure what the current status of Sikome is.

Ghost lake is very cold! Sikome went through a renovation last couple of years and is a pretty nice place. Water seemed fine anytime I was in it. They added fences around the park so that it can be closed off at night

There is usually some added feces as well.

I thought I heard it was waist deep at it's deepest?

It'll likely be warmer than Bonavista because it's shallower. I measured the temp (surface) at Bonavista on Friday and it was 17 degrees.

Unless somethings changed recently, it's definitly more than waist deep.

It is over 6 feet deep in places. The water is nice and warm and they have cleaned things up both in and out of the water. It is a big enough lake for some long laps.

Didn't they find a dead horse in there when the lake was drained? This goes years back

One thing about Sikome...

If it looks like a Chocolate bar in the water...it isn't...

You may have figured this out, but depending on your needs, it may be more of a splashing around lake, not lap lake.

Yes, you can swim a lap end to end in it, and not drag your feet on the bottom, however:

On busy days, you will be running into kids and toys.

Open water swimmers usually want colder conditions (I may be wrong), this isn't the lake for that.

But as it is cheap (free?) might be worth a shot.

I have a friend who works for the City and I'm pretty sure he said Sikome has had better quality than most of the lake community lakes the last few years.

I always make a habit of using air quotes for the second half of the term Sikome "Lake".
