Icon26 Bobrovsky offered $10 mil/yr in KHL

http://en.rsport.ru/hockey/20130623/669811773.html

Quote:
We think that this is an excellent offer for Sergei to continue his career, a return to his home league, to a strong team,” he said. “I absolutely do not agree with those who think it would be a step backwards.”

SKA has reportedly offered $10 million a year to Bobrovsky, and his pay could be exempted from the KHL salary cap under league rules, which allow certain major signings not to be counted, at the league’s discretion.

Bobrovsky played for SKA during last season’s lockout.

I think the rule is that if a player returns and is a national team player, the contract is exempt.

Mob money !!

You gotta think this money comes with some ugly strings attached.

Otherwise a bunch of guys would have left (Malkin, Ovie, Dats, etc.).

I say he stays...

He has not left yet and from everything i have read would rather stay in Columbus. He knows he can't get $10 million to stay in the NHL, but he certainly is not going to accept a low ball offer from Columbus. My guess is that Columbus and him come to an agreement.

If he liked living in Russia then going back makes sense.

Go home, back to your culture, make 4 times the amount of money after taxes (I'm assuming he will get 3yr, 12mil type deal), seems like a no brainer as long as that money is guaranteed.

This cash is probably government backed as part of the olympics and them wanting their players in the khl.

10 Mill a season there's no way he turns that down. CBJ will have to shop one of those first rounder's for a goalie.

those guys you listed are all getting close to max salary and don't have to live in Russia

for a guy like Bobrovsky this probably triples his salary

What type of tax would he pay on this in Russia? I thought I read somewhere that certain salaries could be tax exempt.

To be fair...the KHL did have him first. That being said, that's a lot of dough for a guy who was considered a failed backup about a year ago.
