Default First nations will blockade roads as part of 'Idle No More' protest

Quote:
In Calgary, Treaty 7 protestors plan to slow down traffic at noon on Friday along 16th Ave. N.W. between Edmonton Trail and 14th Street N.W., by driving a number of vehicles very slowly on that stretch of road.

What is "idel"?

-edit- Oh, I see in the article it's "idle". I still have no idea what the protest is about, though. My instinct - and it may be misplaced - is that the first rule of raising awareness is that you should make sure that your message is actually included in stories about your protest.

I don't see the protest gaining them a lot of sympathy....

I feel that much like the second amendment needs to be revisited in the US. A lot of the treaties and policies regarding First Nations people in Canada need to be revisited...A lot of stuff that was agreed to a hundred years ago, probably doesnt need to apply now.

Can anyone honestly come up with a good reason why having First Nations people operate the same way every other culture does in Canada is a bad thing?

I think it is something to do with a new bill that was introduced that would change how their waterways are protected.

"Idle No More". They're tired of exhaust from vehicles left running?

I guess they mean that they are no longer going to sit idly by while perceived government abuses happen.

I'll agree I'm not clear on what is being protested though.

This will get very ugly if there is a car accident, or worse a motoring fatality as a result of this protest. It really doesn't seem to be a way to garner support for your cause.

I wonder what aboriginals are doing to educate people about rampant corruption in first nation governments.

It's stemming for the law-changing omnibus bill regarding protected lakes and streams.

Good on them for speaking up. Seems like they care about our country more than a lot of people do.

While saving the enviroment is a great cause, First Nations need to prioritize a bit better. They've got much bigger problems on their hands.

Protesters said they feel the bill would violate their treaty rights and takes away any control they have over their land.
I'd be interested to see how it would violate their treaty rights and take away control of their land.

Examples anybody?

For some reason, this reminds me of the Occupy Calgary movement.

I have an urge to get out the 1996 Cummins twin-turbo and start rolling coal behind them.

That's funny considering the reserves I grew up near were almost 80% clear cut with no reforestation whatsoever and fished/hunted almost completely dry.

10 am - noon is about the only time during the day that stretch isn't a crawl.
