 |
Stealing RFA's means losing our firsts.

Ekblad/Reinhart/Nylander and McDavid are real possibilities for the Flames.

So no, I don't want to steal any RFA's.

If anything we could/should be trying to acquire players through trade. ex. Give Vancouver/Philly a 7th for Raymond/Simmonds (not that it is actually possible).

I think there is a reasonable chance Calgary tries to get a D like Schenn or Coburn out of Philly.

Matt Stajan 2.0?

Sounds like something Feaster would do.

I think a someone Feaster could target is Teddy Purcell. 28 years old 6 foot 3 right winger. He's gritty but also produces. He's been improving over the last three years. He has 51 to 65 and if last year had been a full year he could have gotten 70+ points.
At 4,500,000 for the next three years he could come cheap for the Flames

 Tampa Bay trades:
 Teddy Purcell $4,500,000 3-years
 2013 1st (3rd)

 Calgary trades:
 2013 1st (6th)
 2013 1st (28th)
 Chris Butler 2013 RFA

Theres no way the lightning can sign 5 guys on $2,407,251 so Calgary takes on Purcell to free up Tampa Bay. They get Butler to have a top 6 defensman in thier lineup instead of AHL call-ups. We move up in the draft and they get two picks in the 1st round.

Drouin and Purcell is a pretty steep. I highly doubt 6th, 28th and Butler would get it done

What would taking on Vincent Lecavalier (and his contract) garner a team in return? Feaster obviously knows Vinny.

Seven more years at $7,727,273/season.

I'm really interested to see if there will be much action regarding taking on players with huge contracts. Teams like the Flames have got to look into it though.

(Also, I think the Flames will have more cap space with Kipper available.)

It's slightly more realistic if the second pick going their way is the 22nd. But Butler.... probably not. Might have to think more Giordano, or dare I say Brodie.
Brodie, 6th, 28th -or- Gio, 6th, 22nd and Tampa might think about it. But they are probably the most realistic pick of the top 4 to acquire through trade. If they're looking at beefing up their blue line, then trading down to 6th might be ideal.

I think the Flames have a better chance at getting the #2 pick out of Florida and I could see someone like Tangs being part of the deal... Maybe something along the lines of Tangs, #6 and #27 (or whatever the Pens pick is) for #2 and a cap dump if they wanted

This is another trade that does change the previous trade.
Phillidalphia is $-2,552,262 in the hole.
Braydon Coburn is a 6 foot 5, 28 year old who is coming off of his worst season. He has been dropping productively for the last 3 years. At $4,500,000 for the next 3 years he come also cheep.

 Phillidalphia trades:
 D-Braydon Coburn $4,500,000 3 years
 2013 1st (11th)
 G-Steve Mason $1,500,000 1 year

 Calgary trades:
 2013 1st (22nd)
 2013 1st (28th)
 D-Chris Butler 2013 RFA
 G- Leland Irving

Calgary gets expirence on the blue line. As desperate as they are to get younger Philly opens up cap space. They also get two 1st round picks. Calgary moves up.

Now adjusting the Teddy Purcell trade.

 Tampa Bay trades:
 RW-Teddy Purcell $4,500,000 3 years
 2013 1st (3rd)

 Calgary trades:
 D-Anton Babchuck 2013 UFA
 2013 1st (6th)
 Philly 1st (11th)

It's looking like Kipper will retire meaning it frees up $5,833,333.
 Calgary walks away with:
 G- Steve Mason $1,500,000 1 year
 D- Braydon Coburn $4,500,000 3 years
RW- Teddy Purcell $4,500,000 3 years
 2013 3rd pick overall (Drouin?)
 $14,505,000 cap space

You can't really trade Irving and Babchuk when everyone but the kitchen sink knows they won't be playing in the NHL next year.

			two things
does Tampa have a choice on that Tampa trade? because if they do it's a no

second, these numbers aren't taking in to account a lot of things, mostly buyouts

Philly for example, Pronger is on LTIR and they buy out Bryz, suddenly they have 8m in cap space and the only roster spot they have to fill is a goalie

buyout Briere is well and they have 14m in cap space, so no they aren't in any trouble

Canucks are a Luongo trade and a Ballard buyout/trade away from having 10m cap space as well

buyouts are by far the big equalizer this year
 Toronto/Montreal/Vancouver/NYR/Chicago/Detroit

6 teams that made over 20m in operating income in 2012 (the first 4 on the list made over 30m)

If those teams owners are actually committed to winning both buyouts should be used either to help their own team or to effectively buy assets with another bad contract (i.e the many mooted Dipietro + prospects/picks deals)

Does Tanguay honestly have any substantial trade value? With the length of his contract I doubt there are going to be many teams willing to offer up much for him. I'd pretty much take anything you can get for him right now since he shouldn't be a part of future plans now that Iginla and soon to be Cammalleri are gone.
If a team offers up a second rounder they better jump at the deal.

Agreed, Tanguay has little to no trade value IMO.
