Andy McDonald retires
http://www.truehockey.com/articles/P...ald-Retirement
Quote:
McDonald had five documented concussions over the course of an 11-year NHL career, including two with the St. Louis Blues. The threat of another head injury not only ending his career but also the potential long-term effects began consuming the former All-Star.
“The last few years too much of the focus became worrying about the next hit. I was always thinking about it.” Said McDonald.
Retirement began creeping into McDonald’s head during the regular season but it wasn’t until after the Blues were eliminated by the Los Angeles Kings did he become 100% sure. He spent the last several weeks with his family and is confident now is the right time to move on with his life.
“I’m fortunate to get out now. I know I could play two or three more years and I love the game of hockey, but healthwise I know I shouldn’t be playing.”

Glad he's at peace with his decision and glad that he put his health ahead of the game. He was a good player and it's a shame he wasn't able to play longer but hockey is just a short part of a player's life.

Yikes, that's a lot of games missed just due to head injuries:
Andy Strickland@andystrickland10m
Andy McDonald won a Cup with Anaheim #Ducks in 2007 scoring 10 playoff goals...missed almost 140 career games due to head injuries #stlblues

Sucks that his career was cut short by injuries. I remember taking him first in a hockey pool draft because I had the last pick and all the other good players were gone. He was a decent player during his time with the Ducks.

Solid player.
Seemed to be a bit on the decline though and was proably looking at a pay cut. He's turning 36 this summer, so even without the injuries, he probably had only 1-2 years max.
Was always impressed with this guy though. Listed at 5'8'' and managed to put up big numbers, even in the clutch and grab era.

A really likable player, but hes making the right call. Too many shots to the head and not much left to his career, better to take it easy.

Good for him for having the courage to call it, most guys wouldn't be that strong.
I will always remember when he was in the All Star game as a replacement, he was stepping up to skate on to the ice and as they announced it you could see him shrink as they actually said "replacing .. so and so".

I always enjoyed watching his particular brand of hockey. High-skill, hard nosed.

It was the right decision. You can't play scared in this game.
