Default Intellibed.. Sleep Number.. Mattresses?

Hey peeps,

Im in the market for a new mattress and heard some commercials on the Fan (apparently those bloody things actually work).

Anyone try the Intellibed or a Sleep Number? Or any mattress they would recommend. I really don't know much about mattresses, I just like to sleep in them.

I stayed in a hotel a few weeks ago with the sleep number mattress. I don't think that I would ever buy one. Don't get me wrong there is a little bit of entertainment value in screwing around with the controls, but really, how often are you going to do that?

I would say stick with a decent mattress to being with and skip the sleep number gimmick.

The other thing I will add about shopping for a mattress, there is a great deal of margin in matresses. For example a $1500 mattress/box set probably costs the store about 1/2 that. And a $900 set probably costs them a little over $500.

So there is always room to negotiate; especially on the higher end ones.

I don't own a sleep number bed, but like Slava, I stayed at a hotel that had one. I was excited to get to try it, but was quickly disappointed. The air chambers never stayed inflated, so halfway through the night it felt like I was sleeping on the floor - which might have been more comfortable. I had to re-inflate it, only to have it do the same thing again.

I would like to know how the Intellibed and a Tempurpedic rate among other CPers though.

Well it seems Sleep Number is out of the running. Not too surprising given some reviews I read online. How about Intellibed? If if is good enough for Robyn and Peter, is it good enough for me?

I just picked up a memory foam mattress a couple of weeks ago (some fall sale), I really like it, perhaps give one of them a try.

I actually own the top of the line Intellibed (the one with the latex slab beneath the gel layer). I have owned it going on two years now. Although its hard to justify spending 4 grand on a bed I can honestly say that in this case I am happy that I did not compromise when I chose it. I love this bed and wholeheartedly will endorse it for whatever my opinion means on this forum. Maher is right when it it comes to this bed.

Nope, but I just got an IKEA mattress that's a hybrid with a layer of memory foam on top and traditional coil springs in the bottom and it's great for the price.

Memory foam is the way to go. Paying more is worth it as well.

I just went through the process of buying a new mattress and boxspring. I wound up going with a Stearns and Foster. For me it seemed like the best bed I could afford. It was in the mid $2k range. I am glad I spent a bit extra on it boy is it sure comfy. Plus it has a 20 year warranty.

My one con is the total height of my bed now. I should have went with a low profile boxspring. Thats my fault though for not thinking about it when I bought it though.

Well I'll update my old post about Intellibed. I've had one going on seven years now and no complaints. This bed was originally designed for burn victims, so there are no pressure points. I think its amazing, though it may feel too soft for some tastes. Just remember to put a waterproof matress cover on any premium bed, because any stains will void the warranty. PM me if you want more information.
