San Jose has lost in the Playoffs to most of the Western Conference
Here's an odd stat.
In the last 11 years, the Sharks have made the playoffs 10 times. Each time they lost to a different team.
2012-13 Los Angeles Kings
2011-12 St. Louis Blues
2010-11 Vancouver Canucks
2009-10 Chicago Blackhawks
2008-09 Anaheim Ducks
2007-08 Dallas Stars
2006-07 Detroit Red Wings
2005-06 Edmonton Oilers
2003-04 Calgary Flames
2002-03 DNQ
2001-02 Colorado Avalanche
So look for the Sharks to lose to Minnesota or Phoenix next year (or Columbus/Nashville)
I've never heard of a team ever doing that before.

Pretty amazing with all those awesome contending teams they've had over the last decade, that they haven't once advanced to the Cup finals.

In Fairness to them they have lost to the eventual cup finalist or winner in quite a few of those seasons.
Calgary
Edmonton
Vancouver
Chicago
And this year (LA)

to me that goes to show they were never really a 'power' to begin with
it's not like some great teams that have just run in to a team they can't get past, for example the late 90's/Early 00's Red Wings won cups in 97/98/02, but lost to Colorado 3 out of 4 years in that span as well, could have easily been 4 or 5 cups
SJ was just a solid team that probably should have taken a risk to push it over the hump rather than sticking with the good but not great course

Taken a risk?
Like by adding Boyle?
Like by going out and getting Thornton?
Like by shaking things up to grab Heatley in his prime?
What about swapping out Heatley and Seto for Burns and Havlat?
How about walking away from an over priced, older Nabakov and offer sheeting Cup champion Niemi?
One guy that can never really be accused of resting on his laurels is Doug Wilson IMO. He's taken plenty of risks, and continued to attempt to tweak that roster into a Cup winner.

Even this year they completely shook up the bottom half the their line-up by moving out guys like Clowe, Murray and Handzus and bringing in Hannan and Torres. Nothing ground-breaking, but not a lot of GMs are making those types of moves at the deadline when they're pretty comfortably in a playoff position.

Columbus is going to the East so that's one team out of the way

I didn't mean resting on laurels at all, I think he's a good GM
I meant specifically trading Marleau, or Heatley earlier, getting some defensive help 3-4 years ago and arguably not too late etc.
he's made moves, but lately they have moreso to extend a window, and he needed to make more moves in the 06-09 window
I liked what he did at the deadline this year a lot and think with Couture they are set up well for the future, but I just think they were missing 1 guy from going over the top

when the moves were made they weren't comfortable in the playoffs, there was talk of not if but 'when' Marleau and Thornton would be moved
like I said above I think he was great at the deadline
they were generally thought of as sellers though in the weeks leading up

God I'd love to have this problem with the Flames. Only 1 team can win the Stanley Cup each year and it's a 30 team league. The Sharks are always in the conversation it seems.

I honestly think it's the jerseys. Seriously, where are they going to put the Stanley Cup patch?
