France asks Canada's opinion on building a wind farm on Juno Beach
http://www.ctvnews.ca/sci-tech/frenc...ions-1.1289853
Quote:
|
A French commission is holding public consultations on a plan to build wind farms off the D-Day beaches of Normandy, and it wants to hear what Canadians think about it.
A company plans to erect 75 turbines about 10 kilometres off the shore of Juno Beach, where 359 Canadians died during the D-Day invasion on June 6th, 1944.

I would rather they didn't.

Nice of them to ask considering it's their land. I feel like they should proceed. I understand the circumstances but you can't really argue against clean energy can you?

Didn't we free that land so the French could have it and use it as they please? Go ahead, knock yourselves out! It's not like they'll be tearing down the memorials to put the turbines in. Will they?

On the beach, not a fan. 10 km offshore? Sure, I don't have a problem with that.

From the OP "A company plans to erect 75 turbines about 10 kilometres off the shore of Juno Beach"
10km is a ways away, and its not just impacting Juno, but all the D-Day beaches. Its not on land, but rather at sea.

Complete non-issue, esp since it's offshore.

Well since this isn't actually ON Juno beach I don't have a problem with it. It's 10km offshore, I don't see any way that this could impact the memorials or the overall nature of the beaches as historical sites.

As a current member of the CF, I dont find this offensive at all. Kudo's to the French for asking and considering our opinion and still honouring what our soldiers did for their Country.
Lest we forget.

If France wasn't allowed to develop any of it's land that foreign soldiers have died on, not much would be going on in that country. Nice of them to be respectful about it.

Ask any Canadian D-Day veteran and I bet the response is 100% positive. The whole significance of that area is fighting for freedom, so it would seem pretty silly to say no

What is the height of the turbines - do you think you could see it from the beach?
Having actually been at Juno in person, I think it could be a little strange to see them off to the distance. Then again, there were also people sun tanning and kids playing & running around on Omaha/Utah when I was there. They have historical significance but still beaches at the end of the day.
Somewhat surreal but I think I'd be okay with it - for whatever that is worth. Nice that they are open to discussing it and getting feedback.

At least one Canadian who fought at Juno Beach says he's very much against the proposal.
Roy E. Eddy, now 88, call the turbine plan off the coast of Courseulles-sur-mer "very disrespectful."

On a side note, the beach itself was not ceded directly to Canada in perpetuity - unlike the portion of land around Vimy ridge for the park/memorial.
A good number of young Canadians work there every summer/year manning that park.

Do you know any young D-Day Vets?
The post directly addressed his, which was that 100% of all D-Day Vets would support this. That does not appear to be the case.
